Choose Social Sciences exam because... easy to get points

After the first exam day on June 27 with Literature and Math, more than 1 million candidates nationwide entered the second exam day (June 28) with the optional exam of Natural Sciences (KHTN) or Social Sciences (KHXH) in the morning, and Foreign Language in the afternoon.

This year, the number of candidates registering for the Social Science exam accounted for an overwhelming 63% with 670,000 candidates. Statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) after the exam showed that the number of candidates taking this exam reached more than 95% of the total number of candidates registering for the exam. Over 99% of candidates taking the Natural Science exam out of the total number of candidates registering for the exam.

There were 9 candidates suspended from the exam on the morning of June 28, a decrease of more than half compared to 22 candidates suspended from these two exams in 2023. Previously, in the Math exam, the whole country had 3 candidates violating the exam regulations, of which 1 candidate was suspended from the exam, 2 candidates were reprimanded. Compared to last year, the number of candidates suspended from the exam has decreased by 3 candidates (in 2023, 4 candidates were suspended from the exam).

Opinions of some candidates at testing locations in Ho Chi Minh City show that the combined test is not too difficult but long, has a lot of knowledge, and is expected to be highly differentiated. At the testing location of Ba Diem High School (Hoc Mon District), many candidates said they chose the Social Science test because it was "easier to score points" than the Natural Science test.

Duy Thanh, a candidate who chose the Social Sciences exam, said: “I think it is easier to get points for multiple-choice tests and knowledge in the Social Sciences field. For example, the first 30 questions in History are quite easy, with basic knowledge and a little bit of reasoning, you can do it. The last 10 questions are quite difficult, all are specialized knowledge. Or for Geography, half of the questions are quite easy, only the second half are difficult questions.” Similarly, many other candidates at the Nguyen Thuong Hien High School exam site (Tan Binh District) also said that the Social Sciences exam was easier than the Natural Sciences exam.

However, not all candidates avoid the Natural Science group. Bich Ngoc, at Nguyen Thuong Hien test site, said she really likes Physics and Chemistry. “As long as you have a good academic record, you can do well on the Natural Science exam. In the Physics exam, only the last 10 questions are quite difficult, while the first 30 questions are normal. I was able to do all 40 questions, but only about 35. As for Biology, I was sure of 25 questions, the rest were quite difficult,” Bich Ngoc happily said.

According to data from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, the total number of candidates registered for the exam in the Natural Sciences group (Physics 49,444, Chemistry 49,730, Biology 49,234); Social Sciences (History: 37,037, Geography 36,836, CivicEducation 26,421). Meanwhile, for the Foreign Language subject, the number of candidates registered for English was 73,347, Russian 0, French 124, Chinese 176, German 12, Japanese 76, Korean 22. Notably, 13,076 candidates were exempted from the Foreign Language exam according to the general regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training.

Breathe a sigh of relief with the combined exam of Natural Sciences

Regarding the combined exam of Natural Sciences, in Physics, Mr. Dang Quoc Thang - a teacher of the Alpha education system commented that the exam structure remained the same, almost unchanged compared to the official exam in 2023 and was relatively close to the structure of the exam but more difficult than the sample exam announced by the Ministry of Education and Training. Knowledge mainly focused on grade 12 (36 questions), grade 11 knowledge (4 questions), of which the first 30 questions were very basic knowledge, serving graduation requirements. Questions 31 - 35 are very familiar types of exercises in recent years. Questions 36 - 40 serve to differentiate students with knowledge areas similar to 2023. The predicted score range will be 7.5 - 8 points.

Many teachers from the Hocmai Education System assessed that the Chemistry exam was not too difficult, with 75% of the questions (30/40) at the recognition - understanding level, 25% of the questions (10/40) at the application - high application level. The proposed exam included some calculation questions related to real life to test the candidates' ability to apply the knowledge they have learned to their lives.

In Biology, the test is suitable for the graduation recognition goal, with good differentiation for university admission. The peak of the score spectrum can be at 5.5 - 6.5 points. The test is not too difficult but long, good students with good skills can get 10 points.

Some questions approaching the 2025 exam

With the Social Science group, the History exam is assessed by many teachers as ensuring differentiation, being suitable for different types of students. Specifically, the first 20 questions can be answered by students with only simple general knowledge. Level 3 and 4 questions require students to have a firm grasp and understanding of the knowledge content, and to be able to generalize, synthesize, analyze, and think well in order to achieve maximum points.

Ms. Hoang Thi Thuy Nga, Huong Khe High School (Huong Khe District, Ha Tinh Province) commented that the new point of this year's History exam is that there are new types of questions such as quoting comments, assessments, and historical materials for candidates to analyze and evaluate historical materials, develop creative thinking skills and approach the 2025 exam.

The combined exam for Social Sciences continues to be assessed as easier, not putting pressure on candidates. In Geography, because of the use of Atlas, candidates can easily do 15 questions. The chart question is not as difficult as in 2023, so it is not difficult to get an above average score. The score range can be from 7. The possibility of candidates getting a score of 9 - 10 may be higher than last year because there are not many difficult questions.

Civic Education continues to be a subject that can be scored because there is a lot of knowledge in the program and students have been well-practiced. It is expected that the average score will fall to 7-8.

The final exam is English in multiple choice format, so the pressure on the candidates is reduced. The exam has a familiar structure, if the candidates have mastered the basic knowledge, they can be sure of getting 8 points. Many candidates walked out of the exam site with bright smiles, confident of getting high scores in the final exam, which also ended their 12-year journey of studying.

Open a new path

The candidates taking the 2024 high school graduation exam are the last students to study grade 12 textbooks according to the 2006 general education program. Determining that this is the final exam, no one wants to "miss" this exam and then have to go through more difficulties in the 2025 exam and the following years when students will study and take the 2018 program according to the capacity assessment orientation. Although the Ministry of Education and Training previously affirmed that students studying which program will take the high school graduation exam according to that program, the mentality of not wanting to be left behind is the mood of any candidate and parent. Looking at the number of candidates suspended in the entire exam this year has decreased significantly compared to 2023, it shows that the propaganda and mobilization work for candidates and their families in complying with exam discipline has been carried out methodically, effectively, and achieved good results.

In addition, with the exam questions gradually being renewed in the direction of assessing capacity, requiring synthetic thinking, analysis, and judgment, cheating and using documents in the exam room will also gradually be reduced. Especially for the Literature subject, the expectation that from 2025 there will be no "leaked questions, missed questions" even if it is just... guessing and inference by some individuals but still more or less affecting the psychology of candidates before, during and after each exam in recent years is being "ordered" by society and the education sector.
