The Ministry of Construction has just issued Notice No. 220/TB - MXD announced the conclusion of Deputy Minister Pham Minh Ha at the meeting to listen to the initial report on the pre-feasibility study of the Can Tho 2 Bridge Construction Investment Project and the approach roads at both ends of the bridge.

According to Deputy Minister Pham Minh Ha, the Can Tho 2 Bridge construction investment project and the approach roads at both ends of the bridge is a large-scale project with complex technical characteristics, so in-depth studies need to be completed soon.

The leaders of the Ministry of Construction requested the My Thuan Project Management Board to fully absorb the opinions of the agencies attending the meeting to complete the Project's Pre-Feasibility Study Report.

Specifically, regarding the scope, My Thuan Project Management Board directed the design consultant to conduct a detailed study of two options for the starting point of the route at Cha Va intersection to analyze and select to ensure savings, efficiency and convenience for long-term exploitation.

Regarding the investment scale, the leaders of the Ministry of Construction agreed on the investment plan with a scale of 6 lanes, a design speed of 100 km/h, and a lane width of 3.75 m; Prioritizing the plan of not arranging an emergency lane on the main bridge to save investment costs.

In addition, based on the opinion of the Vietnam Maritime Administration, the My Thuan Project Management Board directed the Design Consultant to update the navigation channel location, review the horizontal clearance factors, and navigation water level elevation accordingly. Regarding the vertical clearance, the leaders of the Ministry of Construction requested the Design Consultant to choose the girder bottom elevation similar to the existing Can Tho Bridge.

Regarding the main span of Can Tho 2 Bridge, the leader of the Ministry of Construction noted that, based on the results of the survey and assessment of the riverbed morphology, the requirements for arranging navigation clearance, the location of the shipping channel, and the inland waterway, additional research should be done on the main span span selection options (analysis of the minimum span length) to select the structural option for Can Tho 2 Bridge, ensuring technical requirements and effective use of construction capital investment.

Regarding the longitudinal design of the Vinh Long approach road, Deputy Minister Pham Minh Ha said that, given that the Project is being implemented during a period when most of the highways in the area have been completed and the critical road of the Project is the main bridge section, it will not be much affected by the embankment progress and embankment materials, therefore, the Design Consultant prioritizes the low-rise option to save costs.

Regarding the progress of the Project, the leaders of the Ministry of Construction directed that it is necessary to base on the plan to select the structure of Can Tho 2 Bridge and the expected construction technology to review and recalculate the progress of the Project's completion, ensuring considerations.

“My Thuan Project Management Board directs the Design Consultant to carefully study the investment phase plan for the project items for the shared plan; analyze and demonstrate the full economic and technical considerations of both plans (shared or separate road-rail bridge), in which the shared plan is the plan with the lowest total investment cost for the river crossing project for road and rail,” Notice No. 220 clearly stated.

At the end of May 2025, My Thuan Project Management Board sent the Ministry of Construction the results of the initial study of the Can Tho 2 Bridge Construction Investment Project and the approach roads at both ends of the bridge.

specifically, the Project has a starting point connecting with Cha Va intersection at the end of the My Thuan - Can Tho Expressway Project on the Vinh Long side; the end point connecting with IC2 intersection (intersection with the National Highway 91 - Nam Song Hau connecting road) at the starting point of the Can Tho - Hau Giang - Ca Mau Expressway Project on the Can Tho side.

The total length of the Project is about 17.2 km, of which the approach road and bridge on Vinh Long side is about 11.9 km long; the main bridge is about 1.1 km long; the approach road and overpass on Can Tho side is 4.2 km long (Tan Phu ward and Phu Thu ward, Cai Rang district).

The main bridge section of the project crosses the main channel of the Hau River, with the main span expected to be a cable-stayed structure. The bridge deck has a scale of 6 complete lanes, a design speed of 100 km/h, and an emergency stop strip on the bridge.

My Thuan Project Management Board proposed the main span length of Can Tho 2 Bridge to be approximately 550 m, equivalent to the existing Can Tho Bridge; the navigation width is 300 m.

The approach roads at both ends of the bridge are designed with a complete 6-lane scale meeting the standards of a class 100 highway, including a comparative study of the approach roads running high on the viaduct and low on the embankment.

The Can Tho 2 Bridge and approach roads project is invested in the form of public investment. The preliminary total investment will be clarified in the next steps of the project's pre-feasibility study report. Construction is expected to start in 2026 and be completed in 2030.
