
The conference took place under the co-chair of Mr. Nguyen Hong Minh - Deputy Director of the Vietnam Sports Administration and Ms. Keiko Momii - General Director of the Japan Sports Agency.
Speaking at the opening of the Conference, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Sports Department Nguyen Hong Minh emphasized: The theme of the 16th ASEAN Senior Officials' Meeting on Sports this year is Sports Orientation, contributing to sustainable development, which is very consistent with the goals and orientations of Japan in this cooperation mechanism.
Vietnam commits to participating in regional activities within the framework of ASEAN-Japan cooperation to promote sports cooperation and sports-related activities between ASEAN member countries and partner countries and international organizations that are partners of ASEAN.
Expressing her delight at co-chairing this Conference, Ms. Keiko Momii - Director General of the Japan Sports Agency - also said: This year's Conference marks an important milestone in concluding the ASEAN Work Plan on Sports 2021-2025, while also aiming to build the next phase of cooperation.

Cooperation to build honest and transparent sports
Japan continues to support ASEAN initiatives in priority areas including: Physical Education , Gender Equality, Para Sports, Anti-Doping and Sports Management, based on the Chiang Mai Declaration 2023.
Since 2023, member countries have been actively implementing ASEAN-Japan cooperation programs and achieving results, hoping to continue to have more cooperation projects in all areas of sports.
Reporting at the Conference, Mr. Saw Lwin - Deputy Secretary General of ASEAN reported briefly on the implementation of activities within the framework of the 7th SOMS + Japan (held in Vinh Phuc in 2024) and the 4th AMMS + Japan Ministerial Meeting.
Accordingly, sports cooperation between ASEAN and Japan is implemented based on four main pillars: Developing a team of teachers and sports coaches; Increasing women's participation in sports; Promoting sports for people with disabilities; and Improving anti-doping capacity.
At each content, representatives of organizations such as Seijo University (Japan) updated the implementation status of the Project on Promoting Gender Equality, aiming to increase opportunities for women in sports in ASEAN or Physical Education and Sports for People with Disabilities of Nippon Sports Science University shared very specific and detailed information in each country and each field within the cooperation framework.

In the ASEAN-Japan Cooperation Strategy, the two sides agreed on five strategic cooperation goals until 2030, including: Expanding cooperation in training and research in Physical Education; Promoting gender equality and enhancing the role of women in sports; Developing sports for people with disabilities and social inclusion; Building an honest, transparent, and doping-free sports system; Developing governance, business and innovation capacity in modern sports.
The ASEAN Secretariat said that the Sports Work Plan for the 2026-2030 period is being developed, ensuring consistency with the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 and the region's sustainable development goals.
The conference also acknowledged the results of the 40th ASEAN-Japan Forum (Nagano - Japan, March 2025) and the 27th ASEAN-Japan Summit (Vientiane - Laos, October 2024), in which the two sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership, equal and mutually beneficial cooperation, and continuing to promote people-to-people exchanges, cultural - educational exchanges and sports science research.
In addition, the Conference also reviewed preparations for the 5th ASEAN+Japan Ministerial Meeting on Sports (AMMS+Japan), which is expected to adopt a Joint Statement and Provisional Agenda on October 17.
Delegates appreciated Vietnam's role in chairing and coordinating technical activities, and welcomed Japan's active participation in cooperation projects such as "Sport for Tomorrow", "ASEAN Football4SDGs Forum" and many other initiatives promoting community-based sports and sustainable development...
