BYD Sealion 8 PHEV - 7-seat CUV consumes only 5.5 l/100 km

The launch of BYD Sealion 8 clearly shows the direction of expanding the PHEV product range, not only in the domestic market but also towards global markets.

This is the company's first large CUV model equipped with a PHEV powertrain. Accordingly, the BYD Sealion 8 PHEV is distributed in two versions, DM-i and DM-p, both built on the new generation hybrid technology platform that BYD is strongly developing.

Specifically, the Sealion 8 DM-i variant is equipped with a 1.5L turbocharged gasoline engine, accompanied by an electric motor and a 19 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery pack. With this configuration, the 7-seat CUV can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 8.6 seconds, meeting the needs of urban and highway operation.

Meanwhile, the DM-p version is optimized for higher performance, thanks to the addition of a rear-wheel drive electric motor and a larger battery pack with a capacity of up to 35.6 kWh. Thanks to that, the acceleration time from 0–100 km/h is only 4.9 seconds, on par with many current pure electric high-performance SUVs.

Although official specifications on operating range have not been announced, with a configuration similar to many other PHEV models in BYD's product portfolio, Sealion 8 is expected to be able to travel a combined distance of up to over 1,000 km.

According to BYD's announcement, the Sealion 8 PHEV has an average fuel consumption of about 5.5 liters/100 km, which is a remarkable number for a 7-seat CUV model.

In addition, the DM-p version can also operate entirely on electricity with a maximum distance of 150 km, suitable for daily urban travel needs without using an internal combustion engine.

With the introduction of the Sealion 8, BYD has clearly shown its intention to expand its PHEV product line, not only in the domestic market but also towards global markets. Adding a 3-row CUV to the product line will help the company compete directly with rivals from Japan and Korea in the large family car segment.

In Vietnam, BYD launched the pure electric Sealion 8 model in April 2025. In the near future, it is likely that this fuel-efficient PHEV variant will also be added to the car.
