All 5 Vietnamese students won prizes at the International Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad

The 17th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics was recently held in Brazil. This is the 8th time Vietnam has sent students to participate in the competition.

This year, Vietnam had 5 students participating in the competition, 2 students won silver medals and 3 students won bronze medals.

All five are students of Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, including Nguyen Ba Linh, Nguyen Xuan Hoang (silver medal) and Nguyen Thi Thu Minh, Luu Quang Minh, Dam Ngoc Bao Lam (bronze medal).

Among them, Nguyen Ba Linh won the gold medal at the 16th International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) and the second prize in the national physics competition for excellent students in the 2023-2024 school year. He also won the bronze medal at the 16th International Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad in Poland. Ba Linh received the Odon Vallet scholarship from the Rencontres du Vietnam in 2023.

Nguyen Xuan Hoang won a silver medal at the 2024 Nordic Physics Competition, third prize in the national physics competition for excellent students in the 2023-2024 school year, and first prize in the Hanoi physics competition for excellent students.

Nguyen Thi Thu Minh won the gold medal at the 16th International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO), is the valedictorian of the Physics major at Hanoi National University of Education High School, and the valedictorian of the Mathematics major at the Hanoi Department of Education and Training.

Thu Minh also won a silver medal in physics at the 14th contest for excellent students of specialized high schools in the Northern Delta and Coastal regions in 2023; first prize in the city's contest for excellent students in physics in 2023, and second prize in the national contest for excellent students in physics in 2023.

Luu Quang Minh won second prize in the national physics competition in the 2023-2024 school year; first prize in the Hanoi city physics competition in the 2023-2024 school year.

He also won a gold medal at the 2024 International Applied Physics Olympiad IAPho in Indonesia and a bronze medal at the 2024 Nordic Physics Olympiad NBPhO in Estonia. Luu Quang Minh received the Odon Vallet scholarship from the Rencontres du Vietnam Organization.

Dam Ngoc Bao Lam won the silver medal at the 2024 IAAC International Astronomy and Astrophysics Competition, a bronze medal in physics at the 15th Competition for Excellent Students of Specialized High Schools in the Northern Delta and Coastal Regions in 2024, and a national bronze medal at the 2023-2024 Copernicus CISO International Science and Astronomy Olympiad. He also won the first prize for excellent students in physics at the city level in the 2022-2023 school year.

Bao Lam is the only student out of the five who received the award while in grade 11. The remaining students are in grade 12.
