The exam material was the poem "Talking to my children at the end of the year " by Luu Quang Vu - a work rich in emotions and containing many profound philosophies. However, the rather long quotation made many students feel "overwhelmed" as soon as they approached the topic.
Truong Tan Dung, a student at Ho Nghinh Secondary School, said he had to skim through the questions several times before focusing on each small question to avoid confusion. The social commentary section was considered by many candidates to be close and familiar.
Some students said they had difficulty understanding and developing the ideas in the questions. Mai Phan Minh Anh, a candidate at Tran Phu High School, said that the social argument section could easily cause them to lose points because many students could not balance the two parts of the requirement: "convince parents to trust and accompany" and "good things in the future".
Da Nang City has 11,675 candidates taking the exam, while there are only 10,296 places to enter grade 10 in public schools.
According to Mr. Nguyen Dinh Hoa, Head of the Literature Group at Tran Phu High School, the exam questions closely follow the direction of the Department of Education and Training, with the material being a poem of high humanism.
However, to fully exploit the content, students must have solid knowledge and the ability to deeply perceive. "The reading comprehension questions are not too challenging but are still enough to classify students" - Mr. Hoa commented and predicted that the average score for literature this year is about 7 points.
