Until now, Ms. Mai still cannot forget the cute image and innocent words of her 4th grade son when he heard that his mother had just saved a person in an accident. He looked at his mother affectionately and said: "Mom is really classy. When I grow up, I will also study to become a fire police officer and rescuer to save people." Meanwhile, her 7th grade daughter told her younger brother: "Learning to swim is really useful, so you must study hard to swim well like mom!"
Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai received a Certificate of Merit from the Director of Nam Dinh Provincial Police.
Ms. Mai's husband, Captain Dinh Van Dung, a police officer of Nam Phong Ward, Nam Dinh City, was also moved and proud to talk about his wife: "When the incident happened, I was at work, my wife shared with me on the phone: "I just saved a person, I'm so happy". At that time, I felt quite surprised and couldn't share much with my wife because she said, her body was a bit cold, she had to take the opportunity to lie down and rest. When I saw my wife's image spread on social networks, many acquaintances called to ask, I felt very happy and proud".
Recalling the moment the incident happened, Ms. Mai said: "This was the first time in my life I encountered this situation, so I acted on instinct to save the drowning person without thinking much."
According to Ms. Mai, at around 6:30 a.m. on May 26, after many days of taking care of her family member at the hospital, she drove her mother from Nam Dinh City Hospital to her home in Hong Quang Commune, Nam Truc District. Seeing many people gathered on the bridge, she stopped the motorbike and knew that someone had just fallen into the water. Looking at the fast-flowing Dao River, the victim drifting further and further away, she immediately took off her helmet, put down the bike's kickstand, took off her sandals and said to her mother: "Mom, I'm jumping in to save someone." After saying that, she ran to the stairs from above the bridge down to the nearby dike and jumped into the river.
“At that time, I really just wanted to save the person without thinking much, so I didn't have time to answer my mother's question: "Can I swim? I've been awake for the past few nights taking care of a sick person. Can I save him?". At first, I intended to climb over the bridge railing to jump down, but I saw the victim drifting more than 100 meters away from the bridge, so I ran down the stairs to the nearby dike, got close to where the victim had drifted, jumped into the river, and swam out to quickly pull the person to shore," Ms. Mai recounted.
In the midst of the rushing water, Ms. Mai used all her swimming skills to find a way to reach the victim as quickly as possible. The entire rescue process took only a short time, but when reaching the shore, Ms. Mai and the victim, a 12th grade female student studying at a high school in Nam Dinh province, had to rest for 10 minutes before being able to stand up and walk. "When the victim was safe, I discovered that I had stepped on a piece of ceramic when running down the dike. The wound made me bleed a lot, but I didn't feel any pain because I was only focused on saving the person," Ms. Mai shared.
