More than a decade has passed since winning the Sao Mai 2013 runner-up prize in chamber music, singer Dinh Trang has quietly walked on a path that few people choose and has a strong love for music . That journey had interruptions due to motherhood, had quiet moments due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but then made a strong breakthrough with a music project post-produced in the US, marking a new phase for the artist born in 1988.

In the near future, Dinh Trang will sing in the National Concert " What Will Last Forever " organized by VietNamNet newspaper at 2:00 p.m. on September 2 at the Ho Guom Theater. She and drummer Hoang Ke will perform the song "Thei Mai" - a Cham folk song with the Sun Symphony Orchestra.

An inspiring start

In 2018, after 2 years of Master's study at the Vietnam National Academy of Music, Dinh Trang graduated with a perfect score of 10 - the absolute score that the Council of Professors including big names such as Professor. People's Artist Trung Kien, Professor. People's Artist Tran Thu Ha, Professor. People's Artist Ngo Van Thanh... gave her.

Dinh Trang’s graduation performance at that time was likened to a true concert - where a chamber music nightingale sang passionately and confidently. Musician Vu Thiet - a famously strict person - was moved to tears, calling it a “magical voice”, a technically skilled voice sung from the heart.

For Dinh Trang, that performance was a milestone in affirming the path she had chosen. Although it was bumpy (at that time, chamber music was still very selective of listeners), it made her truly happy.

"Music is the voice of the heart. Although the music genre I pursue is not easy to become famous, and there are few shows, it makes me happy because I get to do what I love," she said.

The Quiet Years and the Return

After her second album was released in 2019 - the time when Dinh Trang reached her technical and emotional maturity, she became pregnant. And then, the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, causing all further plans to stop.

For many years, the stage was missing Dinh Trang. But in that seemingly lost silence, she still diligently practiced, accumulated and kept the passion burning. In the middle of the night when she lulled her child to sleep, her singing still echoed as a way to remind herself that she was still an artist.

"I feel like a revived flame. I may be quiet for a few years, but when I come back, I am as energetic as the first days," Dinh Trang shared.

Not following market trends, Dinh Trang chooses to go slow. She experiments with many colors in music from opera, Nghe Tinh folk songs, revolutionary songs to love songs with a folk feel. But no matter what genre she sings, she still maintains the core of chamber music, which is meticulousness, precision and emotion.

“I have been asked why I don’t sing music that is easier to become famous and make money. But I think chamber music has its own value and is sustainable,” she said.

Not pursuing glamour, Dinh Trang still makes the experts admire her for her refined voice, academics and serious approach to work. Veteran artists such as People's Artist Trung Kien, People's Artist Quang Tho, People's Artist Le Dung... are the role models she always looks up to, not only through music but also through her attitude towards life and work.

2025 marks a big turning point for Dinh Trang as she is about to release a reel tape, mixed by musician Tran Manh Hung. The post-production will be done in the US with funding from a fan who loves her voice.

The project was prepared for more than a year and a half, meticulously down to every detail. "Anh Hung required singing with precision down to every breath. I recorded ten songs in 5 days in Saigon, very hard but worth it. The audience will see Dinh Trang's singing style change unexpectedly," Trang said.

The reel tape will be released on digital platforms, and can be made into CDs and vinyl records - a format that is not only for the listeners but is loved by collectors. For Dinh Trang, it is not only a musical product but also an artistic statement - she is still passionate about music, still sings and creates real values.

Behind the lights is a strong woman

Dinh Trang takes care of her children, her mother with cancer, and her master's degree at the same time, but she never considers it a sacrifice. "I just live my life with passion. Sometimes I feel deprived, but music gives me a great meaning that nothing can replace."

Beside her is a family that always supports her. Her husband is 2 years younger, not in the arts but understands the harshness of the profession and chooses to invest in his wife as a way to silently support her. "He told me to just focus on singing well, he will take care of everything else," Dinh Trang shared.

It is that support that helps Dinh Trang confidently pursue her career in the way she chooses without wavering or compromising. Even before, when she was still renting a house and had a normal economy , Dinh Trang did not compromise with herself. To her, music is something very sacred and having a true singing voice is a gift from God, so she treasures it like a treasure.

Dinh Trang teaches students to earn extra income. Although it is hard, she considers it a joy because she can help many people who have the same difficult starting point as her.

"I am not picky about my students and charge very low tuition fees so that everyone can learn. Because I have experienced difficult days, only studying hard, not daring to go out with friends, afraid of spending the money that my parents saved up for a long time. So I understand the difficulties of students from the provinces who are still passionate about singing," said Dinh Trang.

When asked how far she has come after 12 years in the profession, Dinh Trang calmly replied: "I always work at the beginning stage. I still have many ideas that have not been implemented, and my musical aspirations are waiting for the right time."

"I believe in the power of perseverance. Each chamber artist like me is a small candle, but many candles will light up the whole room. I just hope to be able to contribute to preserving true musical values in a noisy era," Dinh Trang affirmed.
