The "explosion" of Gen Z singers

There is no longer the presence of stars, big names of Vietnamese music, looking at the charts of a series of current music awards such as Lan Song Xanh, Best of 2023 of Zing MP3, Top 10 outstanding MVs of YouTube... all are young rising faces or new names but have songs that suit the taste.

At the Green Wave Awards (awarded on the evening of January 24 at the Hoa Binh Theater, Ho Chi Minh City), singer Phuong My Chi received a great response when releasing the album Vu tru co bay , leading with 5 nominations: Female Singer of the Year, Outstanding New Face, Album of the Year, MV of the Year, Outstanding Collaboration. In addition, the production team of the album Vu tru co bay - DTAP group - also received 2 nominations including Sound Mixing and Music Producer of the Year.

Van Mai Huong also attracted attention with the album Dai Minh Tinh in collaboration with musician Hua Kim Tuyen, receiving 5 nominations, including important categories such as Singer of the Year, Album of the Year, MV of the Year. The Male Singer of the Year category was surprising when it had 4 rappers: Hieuthuhai, Den, Binz, Karik; besides singer - musician Tang Duy Tan. In the list of 10 nominations of Lan Song Xanh, the names appearing are mostly young faces, who have been active in the past year such as tlinh, Wren Evans, Double2T, Grey D, Chillies, Rhyder, Vu Phung Tien, Phao... This also reflects the Vietnamese music market after a year of recording the breakthrough efforts of young singers and musicians.

In the top 30 singers with outstanding products compiled by Lan Song Xanh, many names that were once famous such as Noo Phuoc Thinh, Dong Nhi, Son Tung M-TP, Ho Ngoc Ha, My Tam, Ha Anh Tuan, Tuan Hung, Phuong Thanh, Dam Vinh Hung, Dan Truong, Lam Truong... no longer appear. From 2023, Lan Song Xanh's weekly rankings will be calculated 45% from views on streaming platforms, 45% from listens (through 3 music stores Spotify, Zing MP3, Nhaccuatui) and 10% from audience votes.

Meanwhile, Zing MP3's Best of 2023 award selected 40 artists and 40 songs based on the number of followers, listens and viral numbers on social networks, compiled into a nomination list sent to a panel of music experts including diva Ha Tran, musicians Duong Khac Linh, Nguyen Hong Thuan, Chau Dang Khoa, Khac Hung, Duong K... to evaluate and vote for the Top 10 Artists and Best Songs of the Year (announced and awarded on January 9 in Ho Chi Minh City). The criteria for evaluating outstanding artists and songs are based on factors such as: personal style, active activities during the year, contributions to the community, and the meaning, message, melody, arrangement, and creativity of each song. The Top 40 trending list gathers many Gen Z names such as: Phuong My Chi, Hieuthuhai, Wren Evans, Double2T, Orange, Amee, Phao, MCK... Many young singers who maintained their popularity in 2023 have "doubled" in both the Trending Artist and Trending Song categories such as: Tang Duy Tan with Turn on love and Cut a couple of sorrows , Van Mai Huong with Rain in June and Great star , Hoa Minzy with Thi Mau and Turn on love ...

Recently, the list of statistics of the 10 most viewed Vietnamese music videos in 2023 on YouTube has been officially announced. Holding the No. 1 position is Em dong y (I do) by singer Duc Phuc and foreign music group 911 with 58 million views. Holding the No. 2 position is the hit song Neu gioi by T'linh with 55 million views. Singer - musician Tang Duy Tan also surpassed Son Tung, Den Vau... to rank 3rd with Cut a couple of sorrows (53 million views). Hoa Minzy finished at No. 4 with the MV Thi Mau with 47 million views. Karik's MV Ban doi held the No. 5 position with 46 million views and Nau an cho em by Den Vau appeared at No. 6 with 42 million views. The song Bat tinh yeu len by Tang Duy Tan in collaboration with Hoa Minzy held the No. 7 position with 41 million views. Son Tung M-TP with the audio MV Making my way ranked 8th with 38 million views. Mai mai nguoi ta mar chong with the original version by young male singer Thanh Dat with 36 million views held the 9th position, and Mot ngay khong nang by Phao - Tho Bay Mau ranked 10th with 35 million views.

Director - music producer Tran Thanh Trung commented: "The energy of Gen Z and the different performance styles of these new singers easily create attraction and explosion with young audiences. In the new generation of singers, they are dynamic, creative, dare to think and dare to do, so it is not surprising that they are dominating the market". It can be seen that the generation of Gen Z singers is rising strongly, gradually replacing their seniors and that inevitable rule is happening at a faster pace. "These young people have their own color, qualities, and singing style of the new era, handling modern, catchy arrangements to leave an impression on listeners", musician Duong Khac Linh added.

Indeed, the Vietnamese music market is becoming more vibrant thanks to a new generation of singers who have appeared and are appearing. They are even more favorable when the method of producing and releasing MVs is easier than before with many widespread social networks; plus the opportunity to access international music also helps these music products catch up with trends to better suit the general taste. Musician Nguyen Hoang Duy shared: "This reflects the market when each music genre and taste has its own audience; and Gen Z audiences have a new way of listening, following popular trends, so Gen Z singers naturally occupy a more fashionable position than old names". However, the musician analyzed: "It is also necessary to recognize that if you become famous quickly, the fever will also quickly pass if you are not talented enough to go the long way; and rest assured that nowadays, singers, whether old or new, of any music genre, all have their own audience because of the branching of listeners of all components and ages of the audience".
