Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was shot down over eastern Ukraine on July 17, 2014, as fighting broke out between separatist forces and the Ukrainian military.

All passengers and crew on board, including 196 Dutch citizens, were killed, leaving the wreckage of the plane and the bodies of the victims scattered across corn and sunflower fields.

During the ceremony at the MH17 memorial in the village of Vijfhuizen near Amsterdam, loved ones read out the names of all the victims.

A Dutch court in 2022 ruled that the plane was shot down by a Russian-made missile system over separatist-controlled territory in Donetsk.

The court convicted two Russians and a Ukrainian in absentia of murder for their role in transporting the BUK missile system from Russia into Ukraine, which was used to shoot down the plane. However, Russia denies any involvement or responsibility in the downing of MH17.
