Which stocks are ETFs going to buy and sell before Tet holiday?

4 ETF funds using VN30 index as reference are expected to buy strongly LPB, VIB and MSN stocks, and sell POW, VHM, TCB...

HOSE has officially announced the results of the index portfolio review for the first quarter of 2025. Please note that the new indexes will take effect from February 3, 2025. In addition, due to the Lunar New Year holiday from January 25 to February 2, 2025, the relevant ETFs will restructure their portfolios with a deadline of January 24, 2025.

VN30 Index will add LPB and remove POW from the portfolio. Among ETFs on the market, there are currently 4 ETFs using VN30 index as a reference, including DCVFMVN30 ETF, SSIAM VN30 ETF, KIM Growth VN30 ETF and MAFM VN30 ETF with total estimated assets of VND9.15 trillion as of January 20, 2025. The DCVFMVN30 fund alone has a total asset value of about VND6.5 trillion as of January 20, 2025.

Based on the results of the new index portfolio, SSI estimates that the above funds will buy about 18.3 million LPB shares (6.36% weight); 2.3 million VIB shares (2.7% weight) and 685,000 MSN shares (3.6% weight). At the same time, the funds may sell a large amount of POW shares (3.2 million shares), VHM (3.2 million shares), TCB (1.7 million shares), VPB (1.6 million shares) and ACB (1.5 million shares).

VNFIN Lead Index has no changes in the portfolio in this period. As of January 20, 2025, SSIAM VNFIN Lead ETF has a total asset value of about VND 454 billion.

The VNDiamond Index also has no changes in composition this period with 19 stocks in the portfolio. Among the ETFs on the market, there are currently 5 ETFs using the VNDiamond Index as a reference, including DCVFMVN Diamond, MAFM VNDiamond, BVFVN Diamond, KIM Growth Diamond, and ABF VNDiamond with a total net asset value of about VND12.83 trillion as of January 20, 2025. The DCVFMVN Diamond fund alone currently has a total asset value of about VND12.3 trillion.

According to SSI's estimates, some stocks estimated to be significantly purchased by the fund include: OCB (3.3 million shares), MBB (1.1 million shares), HDB (1 million shares), TCB (975 thousand shares) and ACB (947 thousand shares). At the same time, the fund may sell a large amount of FPT shares (1.2 million shares) and REE shares (674 thousand shares).

Another notable content is the HOSE Index version 4.0. Recently, HOSE issued the HOSE Index version 4.0 Rules to replace version 3.1. This decision will take effect from March 2025. For the first quarter of 2025 restructuring period, the data closing date is December 31, 2024, so the new rules have not yet taken effect in this period.

However, considering the new regulations according to HOSE Index version 4.0, some component stocks will change.

Specifically, with the rule that the matched transaction value must be over 30 billion VND, according to data as of December 20, 2025, BVH shares have a matched transaction value of 23 billion VND, not satisfying the conditions under the new rule.

Regarding the capitalization weight limit regulation, the weight of the Financial group in the index basket will decrease. From February 3, 2025, after adding LPB and removing POW from the VN30 index portfolio, the capitalization weight of the Financial group will be increased to 60%.

The limitation of capitalization ratio by industry group will start from April 2025, while the change of the list of component stocks will be applied from July 2025. The group of stocks in the Finance sector currently in the VN30 basket includes SSI (Securities), BVH (Insurance), and Banking stocks.
