Supermarkets attract many customers during the holiday season.

The long holiday seems to have marked a change in the shopping habits of Nha Trang residents. While supermarkets and shopping malls are bustling with large crowds thanks to many attractive promotions, traditional markets are quite deserted, with a noticeable decrease in purchasing power.

Supermarkets are crowded with customers thanks to deep discounts.

During the recent holidays, major shopping malls and supermarkets in Nha Trang City such as Vincom, Nha Trang Center, Go!, Lotte Mart, Co.opmart, MM Mega Market, WinMart+, etc., recorded a significant increase in the number of locals and tourists coming to shop, have fun, and dine. Prior to the holidays, these establishments had proactively prepared a wide variety of goods, spacious shopping areas, and attractive displays to better serve the consumer needs of customers during the festive season.

On the evening of May 1st, after spending over an hour at Go! Supermarket in Nha Trang, we observed a steadily increasing number of shoppers, primarily focusing on fresh produce, fruits and vegetables, dried goods, and cosmetics. At the checkout counters, announcements were made for staff from various departments to assist with payments, but the area remained overloaded. Observing many customers' shopping carts, we saw they were overflowing with everyday consumer goods such as cooking oil, confectionery, seasoning, instant noodles, meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, shampoo, and various beverages. Go! Supermarket in Nha Trang offered discounts of up to 50% on over 1,000 products, ranging from fresh and processed foods, alcoholic beverages, and refreshing summer drinks to fashionable clothing.

Similarly, Co.opMart, WinMart+, Lotte Mart, MM Mega Market, etc., also implemented many discount programs ranging from 10% to 50%, focusing on essential goods. Besides stimulating demand, supermarkets also combined these with gift giveaways, enhancing the shopping experience. Ms. Nguyen Phuong Uyen (Vinh Diem Trung Urban Area) shared: “Although we had a long holiday, because my children were preparing for their semester exams, my family didn't go on vacation but stayed home. Therefore, my family chose to go to the supermarket to watch movies, have fun, eat out, and take advantage of the deep discounts and many free gifts to buy daily necessities to use gradually.”

According to supermarkets and department stores in Nha Trang City, after the Lunar New Year, purchasing power decreased slightly, so these businesses proactively coordinated with suppliers to implement deep discounts during this holiday period. As a result, sales increased 3-4 times compared to normal days, and at times even 5-6 times.

Traditional markets are deserted.

In contrast to the bustling atmosphere at shopping malls and supermarkets, traditional markets in Nha Trang are quite deserted. The seafood section of Vinh Hai Market, usually frequented by many customers during holidays, is now very quiet. Prices of basic goods remain stable, not increasing compared to normal days. Some items such as grouper, mackerel, squid, crab, and lobster maintain their old prices, but still fail to attract customers. Mr. Bui Anh Tuan, an employee of the Vinh Hai Market Management Board, said that people's shopping habits have changed; they often spend their holidays going out to eat and socialize instead of cooking at home, so purchasing power at the market has decreased.

The situation is similar at Xom Moi market and other markets. Ms. Mien, a small trader at Xom Moi market, said that in recent days, there have been very few customers, even fewer than usual. Some seafood items have even had to be slightly discounted to sell. On the morning of May 2nd, at Vinh Ngoc market, although it was past 9 am, the shelves were still full of goods, but there were very few customers. In the seafood section, Ms. Hoa, a shrimp trader, said that she bought 10 kg of shrimp that morning, but by the end of the market day, she had only sold about 3 kg...

While traditional markets used to be a familiar destination during holidays, many people now prefer supermarkets and shopping malls to combine shopping, entertainment, and dining in a comfortable and cool environment. This reflects a clear shift in the consumption habits of urban residents, where convenience and the shopping experience combined with entertainment services are increasingly prioritized during long holidays.
