During long summer trips, car air conditioning is a lifesaver, helping drivers and passengers avoid the sweltering heat. However, if not used properly, air conditioning can become the "culprit" causing people in the car to experience dry skin, headaches, and fatigue, especially when traveling for long periods of time.
Do not let the temperature get too low.
One of the common causes of headaches and dry skin is that the temperature in the car is too low compared to the outside environment. According to Dr. Lisa Grant - an environmental health expert at the University of Toronto (Canada), the sudden difference in temperature can cause blood vessels to constrict, affecting blood circulation and leading to headaches.
“You should maintain the air conditioner temperature between 24 - 26 degrees Celsius, and combine it with a moderate fan mode so that the air circulates evenly and naturally,” Ms. Grant recommends.
Avoid wind blowing directly on the person
Allowing cold air to blow directly on your face or neck for long periods of time can cause muscle tension, dry nose, dry eyes, and even dull headaches. It is best to direct the air flow to the ceiling or to the sides of the car, avoiding direct air flow on the body.
Add humidity to closed spaces
The air in the car when the air conditioner is on is often very dry, easily causing dehydration through the skin and mucous membranes. To reduce the feeling of dryness, you can put a damp towel or a small glass of water in the car to keep the air moist. If traveling long distances, do not forget to bring a mineral spray to periodically hydrate your face.
Drink enough water, simple but easily forgotten
In a cool, air-conditioned environment, the body tends not to feel thirsty. However, dehydration still occurs silently. “Set a reminder to drink water every 30-45 minutes when traveling long distances. Maintaining the body's moisture will help reduce dry skin and support the nervous system to function properly,” Ms. Grant instructed.
Create reasonable breaks during long journeys
Do not sit still in an air-conditioned environment for many hours at a time. After about 2-3 hours, open the car door and breathe fresh air to relax your body and adjust your body temperature.
Note: Using car air conditioning in the summer is necessary, but if you do not pay attention to the temperature, wind direction or humidity, it is easy to make your body tired during a long journey. Applying the right advice from experts, you will have a comfortable, safe and healthy trip during the hot summer.
