Passion fruit was once considered the main crop of Bao Yen district; however, due to many difficulties in output, there was a time when passion fruit products in Bao Yen were absent from the local consumption market. In recent years, people have gradually restored the area, shifted from small-scale production to linkage, and built a sustainable value chain from production to consumption, thereby showing clear economic efficiency.
These days, the family of Ms. Trieu Thi Mui, in village 2, Dien Quan commune, is focusing on harvesting passion fruit in time for the season. Ms. Mui said: Over the past year, her family has boldly converted part of the land area from growing corn to growing passion fruit.
“This year, passion fruit has a good harvest and good prices. As soon as we harvest, traders place orders. My family is very excited. If the price continues to be stable like this, next year we will expand the area for growing this type of fruit,” Ms. Mui added.
In Xuan Hoa commune, the model of linking, producing and consuming banana products according to VietGAP standards in Mo village is being enthusiastically participated by many households. Currently, in Xuan Hoa commune, there are 53 hectares of bananas, of which 29 hectares are red bananas grown according to VietGAP standards. To ensure product output, local authorities have proactively invited businesses to join ventures and cooperate with farmers.
Accordingly, Thuong Nong Agricultural Cooperative will cooperate with farmers in providing fertilizer in advance to members; at the same time, training on planting techniques, fertilization, pest control, harvesting, and supervision. Based on the output, the Cooperative will annually organize meetings with farmers participating in the project to agree on pricing plans and commit to purchasing products for farmers.
“The cooperative also promotes market research and product promotion to avoid dependence on one partner. This connection helps farmers feel secure in production because they do not have to worry about output,” emphasized Mr. Hoang Van Nham, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Xuan Hoa Commune.

According to the report of Bao Yen District People's Committee, the district is implementing 10 projects to develop production according to the value chain. The total estimated budget is over 100 billion VND (over 51 billion VND from the state budget; over 48 billion VND from enterprises and people). Up to now, the district has approved and implemented 8/10 projects, with a total budget from the state budget of over 33 billion VND, of which 9.7 billion VND has been disbursed, equal to 30% of the assigned budget.
Ms. Trinh Thi Duyen, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Bao Yen district, said: The strong connection between cooperatives, enterprises and people, especially ethnic minorities, has become a fulcrum for developing high-quality agricultural production models. Cooperatives and enterprises have made efforts to build trust with farmers, cooperate, and accompany in applying the state's support policies, overcome difficulties, and expand consumption markets.
By 2025, Bao Yen district strives to become a new rural district of Lao Cai province. To achieve this goal, in addition to focusing resources on infrastructure investment, the district pays special attention to increasing income for ethnic minorities in remote villages and hamlets, considering this a fundamental solution. And changing the production mindset from small-scale, spontaneous production to value chain production has been and is realizing this goal.
