In order to combat childhood obesity in Australia, MP Sophie Scamps has submitted a bill to the Australian Parliament proposing a ban on advertising unhealthy foods between 6am and 9:30pm every day on radio and television programs (photo).

Advertising on social media and online sites would be banned outright. However, the bill would not affect print or outdoor advertising, marketing as part of sports sponsorships, and content posted by food and beverage companies on their own channels.

Australian children are exposed to more than 800 new junk food advertisements on television each year, and there is a direct link between these advertisements and childhood obesity. Obesity is estimated to cost the country’s health system more than $8 billion a year, with 25% of children likely to develop chronic diseases as a result of being overweight.
