As of May 15, the Cambodian National Election Committee (NEC) has recognized 18 political parties for the official party list and candidate list to participate in the country's general election next July.
The NEC press release on May 15 said that after reviewing the completed and supplemented dossiers, the agency officially recognized five more political parties and a list of qualified candidates to participate in the election of deputies to the 7th National Assembly .
Among the political parties requested by the NEC to submit additional documents, the opposition Candlelight Party (CP) was disqualified because it did not attach a document (with visa) confirming its registration as a political party with the Cambodian Ministry of Interior . Many political parties in Cambodia have supported the NEC's decision.
For its part, the CP said it is appealing the NEC's decision to the Constitutional Council, Cambodia's top judicial body.
The political parties recognized by the NEC as eligible to participate in the upcoming general election include the Cambodian People's Party (CPP), Cambodian Youth (CYP), Khmer National Unity Party (KNUP), Rule of Law (DP), Democratic Power (DPP), Cambodian Nationality, Khmer is One, Khmer Development Party (KCP), FUNCINPEC, Honeycomb Democratic Society (BSDP), People's Aspiration, Khmer National Unity, Grassroots Democracy, Cambodian Indigenous Peoples Democratic Party, Khmer Out of Poverty, Khmer Economic Development, Farmers and Women for Women Party.
