Can Tho borrows 6,822 billion VND from ADB for climate change adaptation project

The project aims to adapt to climate change and rising sea levels, creating a driving force for economic development for Can Tho City, and is funded by ADB.

On the afternoon of October 14, Mr. Nguyen Van Hoa, Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee, had a working session with ADB representatives on the progress of the project to build roads to improve connectivity in the southeast region of Soc Trang province (old) and connect with Bac Lieu and Tra Vinh provinces (old).

Mr. Hoa affirmed that the project is very necessary for Soc Trang province (old) with regional connectivity, linking Bac Lieu and Tra Vinh (old) with the Ministry of Finance introducing Can Tho city as the credit granting agency, and the project proposal has been approved by the Government.

Since then, Soc Trang province (old) has proactively arranged capital to prepare investment for this project. Currently, it is selecting a consultant to prepare a pre-feasibility report and assigning the Can Tho City Traffic and Agriculture Project Management Board to be the investor to exploit and be responsible for the project.

According to the consultant, the project will upgrade about 31.4km of coastal road to effectively implement the goal of adapting to climate change and rising sea levels and ensuring long-term stability of Vinh Chau sea dike.

Along with that, about 39km of provincial road 935C connecting the coastal road with Dai Ngai bridge will be built, creating a driving force for economic development for the city.

The project's objective is to build and complete the infrastructure system to increase connectivity to the transport network, further promote the efficiency of exploiting routes in the province, contributing to the socio-economic development and national security and defense of Soc Trang province (old).

At the same time, improve project management capacity, planning, and economic corridor management along the project routes to shift the economic structure towards a green economy that adapts to climate change.

The total investment of the project is expected to be over VND6,822 billion, of which the counterpart capital of Can Tho city is over VND2,305 billion, the rest is ADB loan capital of over VND4,516 billion. Construction is expected to start in 2027 and be completed in 2030.
