The rover is part of Canada’s lunar exploration missions. The country is actively collaborating with NASA’s Artemis program to send astronauts to the Moon by the end of this decade.
Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen has been selected to join Artemis 2 - a four-astronaut mission scheduled to fly around the Moon next year.
“Humanity is returning to the Moon, and Canada is part of this exciting journey,” CSA said in a statement on November 20. “Our first rover will explore the Moon’s south pole. It will use advanced technologies, gather scientific information, and search for water ice.”
The lunar rover was built by Canadensys Aerospace, a Toronto company. CSA also plans to build a lunar cart to help astronauts walk on the surface.
CSA is also calling on people around the world to help choose a suitable name for this lunar rover.
According to the CSA, here are the names for the self-driving car you can vote on:
Athabasca: The Athabasca is the name of a river that flows from the Rockies through Alberta to Lake Athabasca in Canada. The country's rivers and streams have been a transcontinental route for millennia and continue to be a route of exploration and transportation.
River names also reflect Canada's diversity and heritage. The North American nation's future self-driving cars could continue this trend by taking names from other natural wonders of the country.
Courage : To have the courage and confidence to do what you believe in, Courage represents the work that led to the birth of the Canadian Lunar Rover. This lunar exploration mission is the result of more than two decades of building and refining exploration technology expertise.
Glacier : The rover will search for water in the form of ice on the Moon. The name is also a nod to Canada's northern region, where glaciers are a major feature of the country's western and Arctic regions.
Pol-R : A fancy spelling of Polar, used to refer to the regions near the North or South Pole. A large part of Canada lies within the Arctic Circle, and the rover's mission will land on the Moon's South Pole.
Voting runs until December 20 this year.
