"Students' needs are very high, how to meet them as much as possible is a concern of those who work in career counseling," said Mr. Nguyen Hoang Nguyen, deputy editor-in-chief of Tuoi Tre newspaper, at the seminar.
Starting in 2002, the Admissions and Career Guidance program initiated by Tuoi Tre newspaper has organized more than 300 programs and festivals, attracting about 3 million parents and students to attend in person or online.
The program contributes to providing timely information about the exam and admission season for millions of students, directly and thoroughly answering candidates' concerns and questions, and guiding candidates to make appropriate choices at important crossroads in life.
The program is also a two-way bridge between the Ministry of Education and Training and parents and students to promptly convey policies, regulations and guidelines. At the same time, it is a bridge between universities and colleges and candidates nationwide and contributes to changing the concept, content and methods of admissions consulting of training institutions.
From 2025, where should the admissions consulting program be opened? Should it only be held in urban areas or remote areas, islands? How should the organization change? Should the advisory board be adjusted to include more young people, KOLs who can spread positive messages to students?... These are the contents raised by the representative of Tuoi Tre newspaper at the discussion.
Need to continue career counseling and recruitment programs
Ms. Dang Thi Thu Huong, Vice Principal of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi), wants to diversify the forms of admission and career counseling so that students in disadvantaged and remote areas can also access information - Photo: NAM TRAN
The experts in career counseling attending the seminar all agreed that the current information explosion makes high school students and parents seem to be "overfed" with information, but that is also disadvantageous because it is easy to be confused by information. If you do not have access to accurate and reliable information channels, it is easy to make mistakes when choosing the wrong direction.
Dr. Dong Van Ngoc - Principal of Hanoi College of Electromechanics - said that "not only is it necessary, but a trustworthy admissions and career counseling program is more important than ever at the present time. The program will be a "filter" for high school students and parents to access the necessary information".
Experts also raised the question of "How does AI participate in career counseling?" AI can be applied to synthesize and process data systematically, or can also analyze students' interests and qualities to give suggestive results about choosing future careers.
However, some experts at the seminar said that AI cannot replace direct consultation because it is difficult to personalize, provide information covering all cases, and meet the real needs of students and parents.
Dr. Nguyen Manh Hung, Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training) said that at this time, the Department of Higher Education has received a lot of information from parents and candidates related to misunderstanding information and regulations due to mistakenly referring to fake information sites and using old data. This shows that the more confusing information there is, the more need there is for channels to provide accurate and reliable information and career counseling.
Mr. Hung said the ministry is considering many shortcomings in the issue of early admission and opening too many admission methods from the reality of university admission in 2024, to build admission regulations in 2025.
Need early and diverse career guidance
Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong - Vice Principal of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) - suggested that in the next phase, there should be more diversity in the forms of admission and career counseling.
Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Phu Khanh - Vice Principal of Phenikaa University - said that more attention should be paid to early career guidance in admission and career counseling.
From the perspective of a high school administrator, Ms. Tran Thi Huong Hai, principal of Yen Lang High School (Hanoi) is also interested in early career guidance. She said that 10th grade students have to start choosing a combination of subjects according to their career orientation, but there is a lack of information about career guidance.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhiep, principal of Chu Van An High School (Hanoi) said that right from entering high school, students and parents need information to have career orientation and build a study plan - Photo: NAM TRAN
Sharing at the discussion, Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhiep - Principal of Chu Van An High School (Hanoi) said that at the beginning of each school year, school leaders must directly discuss with both parents and students of each class, to help students have a study plan based on the goals set after finishing grade 12. This is necessary for students to have a plan, motivation and not get tired when having to focus on the final stage.
Therefore, early career guidance information is very important. As for the stage of major counseling, exam counseling and enrollment, it is only more effective when organized after the time when schools announce their enrollment plans and the Ministry of Education and Training issues regulations on high school graduation exams, enrollment regulations, etc.
Ms. Nhiep also hopes that with the responsibility to the community as Tuoi Tre newspaper has done for over 20 years, in the coming period, the Admissions and Career Counseling program will have innovations to be closer to the needs of students and parents. In particular, it is necessary to provide students with a methodology in choosing a career based on the general picture of admissions.
The opinions at the seminar will be listened to by Tuoi Tre newspaper to build a more effective and demand-oriented Admissions and Career Counseling program in the future, continuing to be a bridge for State management agencies and training institutions to reach students and their parents.
