Durian prices plummet, Hanoi residents eat "king of fruits" like ordinary people

Once a luxury item with a price tag of up to millions of dong per fruit, durian has now become a popular fruit, sold everywhere in Hanoi, from fruit shops, online markets to street sidewalks.

Currently, whole Ri6 durian is commonly sold for 40,000-60,000 VND/kg, Ri6 durian pulp is only 150,000-200,000 VND/kg, some places even sell it for only 95,000 VND/kg.

Monthong durian, a popular variety from Thailand, also has a whole fruit price ranging from 50,000-80,000 VND/kg, while this type of durian pulp retails for 140,000-300,000 VND/kg.

Prices of durian and domestic fruits have dropped dramatically.

According to business sources, the current price of durian is only one-third of the peak in 2024. The main reason is that exports to the traditional Chinese market are facing difficulties, causing a backlog of goods, causing supply to be concentrated in the domestic market. Business people predict that when the Central Highlands region enters the main harvest season, durian prices may fall even further.

Not only durian, many other fruits are also plummeting in price. According to records in Ho Chi Minh City, lychee and rambutan are now only 15,000-20,000 VND/kg, while mangosteen, a high-end fruit, is only 30,000-40,000 VND/kg depending on size.

Orange prices have dropped sharply to 6,000-10,000 VND/kg, dragon fruit and watermelon fluctuate around 12,000 VND/kg, a record low in many years.

The main reason is that the Chinese market tightened quarantine and diverted imports from other countries, causing domestic inventory to increase, pushing prices to rock bottom.
