The interceptions were carried out by Sa'ar 6-class frigates on offshore patrol missions to monitor potential threats from the sea, amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran.

According to information from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the sophisticated sensor system integrated on the Sa'ar 6-class frigate - a class of warships designed to protect Israel's coastal waters as well as offshore assets, including key natural gas drilling platforms - detected and closely tracked the Iranian UAVs.
The Barak Magen system - developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) - was activated to intercept the incoming targets. According to an IDF spokesman, all eight UAVs were shot down. However, the exact locations of the interceptions were not disclosed.
The Barak Magen is said to mark a significant step forward in naval air defense technology, designed to deal with a variety of threats in modern warfare. Unlike traditional missile systems that are optimized to intercept high-altitude ballistic missiles, the Barak Magen is specifically designed to handle low-flying, maneuverable targets such as UAVs, cruise missiles and sea-based threats.
According to IAI, the system integrates advanced radar, electro-optical sensors and interceptor missiles capable of intercepting targets at a distance of more than 150km. The modular design allows Barak Magen to be deployed on a variety of combat platforms, but the integration of the system into the Sa'ar 6 class frigate, a compact warship with powerful firepower, has attracted particular attention.
Built by Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, the Sa'ar 6 is one of the mainstays of Israel's maritime strategy. The warship is about 90m long, displaces 1,900 tons, and is equipped with the EL/M-2248 MF-STAR radar with 360-degree scanning capability, helping to detect and track threats from all directions.
The ship's firepower includes not only the Barak Magen system, but also integrated anti-ship missiles, torpedoes and electronic warfare systems, allowing effective operations in conflict environments, dealing with both conventional and asymmetric threats. The ship is designed to protect Israel's exclusive economic zone, where many important energy infrastructures are concentrated.
According to analysts, the IDF’s claim of successfully intercepting Iranian UAVs still needs to be independently verified. It is unclear whether the destroyed UAVs were armed, what their flight path was, or what their real target was. Some other opinions say that Iran’s launching of several UAVs toward Israel was just a move to probe the enemy’s defense system.
