A young couple who had just been married for 5 days divorced, causing Thai social media to explode.
Accordingly, groom Khun Nat in Ratchaburi province, Thailand said that the reason his marriage broke down so quickly was because of money.
The couple have been married for 5 days.
“ We argue about money. Before the wedding, I discussed with the bride’s family about the expenses. I told my mother-in-law that I would pay for the wedding banquet but did not specify how much I would support. Because there were 30 tables worth 40,000 baht (more than 27 million VND), there were disagreements between the two sides. After talking and agreeing, we would support paying half of the amount, 20,000 baht (13.6 million VND), but her mother collected all the wedding gift envelopes. So I told my wife to pay in advance, and I would pay the remaining half after opening the wedding gift envelopes.”
But the story doesn’t stop there. Because the cost of the wedding is just one part, there are many other costs for a wedding such as photography, organization, makeup…
The husband said: “I said I would pay for the photo shoot. As for the organization, I had already made a small deposit, and the remaining amount was about 13,900 baht (9.4 million VND), so I asked her to talk to her mother about the remaining 20,000 baht that could be advanced to pay the organization in advance. Paying 5,900 baht (more than 4 million VND) to the makeup artist would have settled the advance payment.”
It sounds cumbersome, but the reason the groom calculated that way was because they were having a joint wedding and the bride's mother needed all the wedding money (including the groom's relatives). Mr. Khun was not rich, so he decided from the beginning that he would open the wedding envelope to pay for the expenses.
After the wedding, the couple also had conflicts over dowry and constant arguments and quarrels.
Khun told his wife straight that if this continued, they would not be able to live together. He wanted to get back the dowry money. They argued and had to go to the police station on March 21.
Khun said the dowry was quite large, 202,000 baht (137 million VND), so he wanted to go to court to settle the matter. After returning from the police station, his wife promised to pay him 50,000 baht (34 million VND), but nothing has been done yet.
The new bride denied everything and said they were not divorced.
The couple met in 2021 and dated for 2 years before deciding to get married. Khun admitted that when they were in love, they argued and broke up many times before getting back together. Until now, he affirmed that he still has feelings for his bride, but if they are like this right after getting married, how can they live together for the rest of their lives?
The group of reporters sought out the bride Beam for further comment. She denied everything and said that the two were not divorced. She asked him not to live together because “if you truly love each other, love will be there no matter where you are”. Beam wanted to stay in her home and continue doing the job she was doing. But she did not want a divorce, perhaps because she was afraid of having to face the return of the dowry.
It is unclear how the story will end, but the lack of clarity in finances and money also causes cracks in the marriage.
Before organizing a wedding, both parties need to sit down and discuss clearly, organize within the allowable conditions to avoid debt and additional expenses after the wedding.
