Ready to enlist in the army.
On the morning of February 26th, twin brothers Pham Cong Anh and Pham Cong Nhat (19 years old, residing in My Son village, Cam My commune, Cam Xuyen district, Ha Tinh province ) woke up at 4:30 AM to prepare their military equipment, ready to leave for military service.
The twin brothers woke up early to prepare their military gear, ready to leave for their military service.
Cong Anh and Cong Nhat are among the nine new recruits from Cam My commune who were selected for military service and public security service in 2024.
After putting on their neat Navy uniforms, the twin brothers were picked up from their home by officials from the Cam My Commune People's Committee to attend the military enlistment ceremony held at Ha Huy Tap Square (Cam Xuyen Town, Cam Xuyen District).
Cong Anh and Cong Nhat lit incense at the ancestral altar before heading off to join the army.
"This isn't the first time the two of us have been away from home and our parents, but the emotions are still overwhelming. My younger brother and I have prepared everything and are ready to join the military and become Navy soldiers," Cong Anh said.
Born into a family with a strong tradition—his grandfather was a veteran revolutionary, and his father was a former soldier—Cong Anh and Cong Nhat quickly became aware of their responsibilities to their family and society.
The twin brothers said goodbye to their parents before setting off on their journey.
After finishing high school, Anh and Nhat both left their parents to find jobs to help support their families. Anh got a job as a waiter at a restaurant in Ky Anh town (Ha Tinh province), while Nhat went to Quang Tri province to work. Their combined salary averaged 7-8 million VND per month.
Officials from Cam My commune came to Cong Anh and Cong Nhat's house to pick them up.
Before the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Dragon 2024, upon hearing that the 2024 conscription order was approaching, Cong Anh and Cong Nhat immediately quit their jobs and took a bus back to their hometown to volunteer for military service. After the preliminary medical examinations, the two brothers were selected and became new recruits of a unit under the 3rd Naval Region stationed in Da Nang.
"I was the one who encouraged my two sons to volunteer for the army."
Mr. Pham Cong Tien (66 years old, father of the twins) said that before receiving the conscription order, his sons asked him to go to the Cam My Commune People's Committee to write volunteer applications for them to join the army. Following that, his two sons returned home and personally went to the Commune People's Committee to write volunteer applications to join the army.
Mr. Tien and his wife bid farewell to their two sons as he set off to fulfill his duties as a soldier.
"My father was a pre-revolutionary cadre, and I fought in the Cambodian battlefield and the northern border war. Therefore, I want my two children to become soldiers, following the family tradition. Everyone must fulfill their duty as a citizen, so sending them early means they can return early. The military environment is like a great university where my children can be trained to develop the steely resolve of a soldier, always ready to defend the Fatherland," Mr. Tien confided.

Ms. Bui Thi Luong (51 years old) is Mr. Tien's second wife. After his first wife passed away, Mr. Tien remarried and had two more children, twins Cong Anh and Cong Nhat.
"I'm both happy and sad that my two sons are joining the army. I hope they train well in the military environment and complete their service soon, returning to their parents," Mrs. Luong said.
According to Mr. Nguyen Dinh Phu, Commander of the Cam My Commune Military Command, the twin brothers Cong Anh and Cong Nhat are a special case among the 9 new recruits from the locality who will be joining the army in 2024.
Leaders of Cam Xuyen District shake hands and encourage the twins before they leave for military service.
"Usually, in families with two or three brothers who receive conscription orders, one is granted a temporary deferment. However, Mr. Tien's family and both of his sons volunteered, so their request was granted. Mr. Tien's family is a prime example for people in the commune to learn from and emulate. We also facilitated the enlistment of both twin brothers in the same unit for easier training and study," Mr. Phu informed.
