Korean national team players in discord, 'bullet' pushed to KFA President

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên15/02/2024

The KFA is scheduled to hold its first meeting of the National Team Power Enhancement Committee in 2024 on the afternoon of February 15th at the Jongno-gu Football Center (Seoul). Following that, a press conference will be held at 2 PM to announce the discussions. The meeting will be attended by the team's Technical Director, Michael Muller, and five other high-ranking figures in Korean football.

Notably, coach Jurgen Klinsmann and his entire coaching staff have left South Korea and will participate in the meeting online. Meanwhile, it is still unknown whether the President of the Korean Football Association, Chung Mong-gyu, will attend, as he has remained completely silent since the 2023 Asian Cup.

The altercation on the South Korean national team was more serious than people thought.

On February 13th – a day before the altercation between the South Korean national team players was exposed – the KFA held a free-discussion meeting without Chung Mong-gyu, the highest-ranking decision-maker. The opinions of the executives were initially gathered before the Power Strengthening Committee. At that time, the four Vice Presidents in charge: Kim Jeong-bae, Jang Oe-ryong, Lee Seok-jae, and Choi Young-il, were present. According to South Korean media reports, the focus was on the dismissal of coach Jurgen Klinsmann.

However, because it was held without key figures like coach Jurgen Klinsmann and Chung Mong-gyu, it was considered a "meaningless" meeting.

Two key figures, coach Jurgen Klinsmann (right) and chairman Chung Mong-gyu, were absent.

"The KFA has been criticized for holding a boastful meeting. The meeting concerned coach Jurgen Klinsmann through the Power Enhancement Committee but failed to reach any conclusions," OSEN wrote.

Korean newspaper reports: "Chairman Chung Mong-gyu's incompetence has been exposed."

Immediately after South Korea lost 0-2 to Jordan in the Asian Cup semi-final on February 6th, rumors of coach Jurgen Klinsmann's dismissal surfaced in the country. South Korean media approached Chairman Chung Mong-gyu for a response, but he ignored them amidst the heated public sentiment in South Korea.

"As head of the KFA, Chung Mong-gyu has turned a deaf ear to every issue. He didn't even consider whether or not to fire coach Jurgen Klinsmann, but surprisingly, what he chose was to skip all meetings and refuse to answer any questions," commented CSB.

Chairman Chung Mong-gyu has been avoiding all matters since the 2023 Asian Cup.

Meanwhile, the Yonhap news agency criticized: "After being eliminated in the Asian Cup semi-finals, coach Jurgen Klinsmann emphasized: 'I will go to South Korea and analyze everything,' but then he left for a vacation in the US on February 10th - just two days after returning to South Korea."

Chung Mong-gyu could not have been unaware of the public outrage in South Korea. However, in the face of this information, the KFA turned a blind eye, allowing coach Jurgen Klinsmann to work from home. Therefore, Chairman Chung Mong-gyu had to bear the consequences himself. His incompetence in management has been exposed.

On February 13, the People's Livelihood Countermeasures Committee announced that it had filed a complaint with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency against Chairman Chung Mong-gyu for coercion, obstruction of business, and violation of the trust of the Korean people.

Chung Mong-gyu has visited Qatar and met with coach Jurgen Klinsmann and players of the South Korean national team on several occasions.

Chairman Chung Mong-gyu's silence has angered South Korean fans. Controversy continues to erupt within the national team managed by the KFA. Now, in addition to sacking coach Jurgen Klinsmann, South Korean fans also want Chairman Chung Mong-gyu to resign.
