Star anise is the main crop of Chi Lang district (Lang Son province). To contribute to improving the productivity, quality and economic value of star anise, Chi Lang has had many solutions, especially organic star anise cultivation.
Star anise has been present in Chi Lang district for a long time, but people still grow star anise based on their own habits and experiences. Due to the lack of promotion and application of science and technology, productivity is low, the quality of star anise is uneven... so it is difficult to meet market demands, and economic efficiency is low.
Chi Lang district is promoting the development of organic star anise growing area.
Mr. Phung Van Nghia - Chairman of Chi Lang District People's Committee said: Chi Lang District has advantages in developing star anise, especially in rocky mountainous communes such as Bang Mac, Gia Loc, Bang Huu, Thuong Cuong, Hoa Binh , Van Linh... To increase the value of star anise, in recent years Chi Lang District has promoted propaganda and mobilized people to plant and care for it according to an organic model with links to product development in the supply and consumption chain.
On that basis, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Chi Lang district has coordinated with communes to organize training courses on star anise planting for local people. Along with that, it is supporting materials, seeds... Since 2020, many models of organic star anise planting have been built.
Growing star anise using organic methods means no chemical fertilizers or herbicides are used, the cultivation process must be done manually... when harvesting, the star anise must be stored in clean bags, the flowers must be picked from the tree, not picking up fallen flowers at the base...
Mr. Hoang Van Khoa - Chairman of Gia Loc Commune People's Committee said: With the support of the functional departments of Chi Lang district and Lang Son province, people in Gia Loc commune have confidently developed organic star anise cultivation. Up to now, Gia Loc commune has 320/900 hectares of star anise grown organically, production according to organic methods has helped the plants achieve a yield 10-20% higher than before.
With technical support from the authorities, people in Chi Lang district have grown star anise stably.
Sharing more about the value of star anise in Gia Loc commune, Mr. Tu Van Duong in Lung Mat village said: With the support of the state, from techniques, varieties, and now being supported with links to consume products, we are very excited. Now 1 hectare of star anise can yield 60 tons of flowers, earning nearly 200 million VND/year.
Not only in Gia Loc commune but also in Bang Huu and Bang Mac communes... households participating in the organic star anise growing model have achieved positive results, bringing in good economic benefits.
On that basis, to create a sense of security in production and increase the economic value of star anise for farmers, Chi Lang district has also promoted connection activities, calling on cooperatives and enterprises to participate in the production and consumption chain of star anise products, to contribute to creating a more stable consumption market. Up to now, 400 hectares of star anise of the people have participated in the chain from planting to product consumption.
Stable quality of star anise in Lang Son is present in many countries around the world.
Star anise planting has contributed to increasing the green color of forests, improving people's lives, improving growers' health... Up to now, the area of star anise planting in Chi Lang district has reached 1,900 hectares, the output is about 800 tons of dry fruit/year, star anise has contributed significantly to the economic growth of Chi Lang district.
Currently, Lang Son province's star anise products are available in many countries such as: China, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, UK, USA, France, Japan, Germany...
