10 years ago, soursop was planted in Long My district, but the area was small. Soursop was mainly grown as grafted trees (grafted on custard apple rootstock) to take advantage of the good characteristics (tolerance to alum, salinity, flooding, drought) of the rootstock.
Soursop trees are constantly increasing in area, specifically in 2023 it reached more than 176.2 hectares, an increase of 97.6 hectares compared to 2016. With high productivity (20 - 30 tons/ha), farmers growing soursop earn profits from 167 - 256 million VND/ha/year (3.3 to 5.1 times higher than the profit of growing rice 2 crops/year). In parallel with guiding farmers to switch to growing soursop trees, authorities in Long My district have implemented many solutions to promote the development of soursop trees in the direction of improving productivity, quality and value. Specifically, in 2017, Thuan Hoa Soursop Cooperative (Hamlet 2, Thuan Hoa commune) was established to form a concentrated production link, large-scale goods. In 2021, the People's Council of Long My District issued Resolution No. 02/2021/NQ-HDND dated March 12, 2021 on the project to develop sustainable agriculture, adapt to climate change in Long My District for the period 2021 - 2025, with a vision to 2030, in which soursop is considered one of the four key crops.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Long My District, every year, using various sources (career capital, capital from other programs, projects, and projects), Long My District has implemented many preferential policies, support, and transfer of scientific and technical advances to help farmers produce soursop with high and stable income. In the period of 2021 - 2022 alone, Long My District has implemented a soursop growing model under the project "Building livelihood models adaptable to climate change and controlled water sources when building the Cai Lon - Cai Be sluice system". Participating farmers are supported in building demonstration models, fertilizers, pesticides, irrigation systems, warehouses for storing agricultural materials; training in transferring farming science and technology; training and education in production according to GlobalGAP standards. This model has helped farmers reduce production costs, improve productivity and product quality, and achieve profits of VND342 million/ha, an increase of VND49.5 million/ha compared to the old conventional method. The area implementing the model has been certified to meet GlobalGAP standards.

Mr. Tran Chi Hung, Provincial Party Committee member, Secretary of Long My District Party Committee, said that the district aims to continue developing soursop trees until 2030 according to the value chain to meet market demand with a raw material area of 300 hectares and combined with processing and deep processing to create added value for soursop products, increasing farmers' income. Climate change is having an increasingly serious impact on Long My District, but with the strong vitality of soursop trees growing on custard apple trees, it will certainly help farmers have a better life. At the same time, Long My District will also continue to strengthen connections with companies and associated businesses to help stabilize and sustain consumption for farmers growing soursop trees.
