On January 19, according to Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Viet Hoa - Head of the Department of Pediatric and Neonatal Surgery, Viet Duc Hospital, this is a special case, the mother with twins had her water break when she was only 29 weeks pregnant.
Due to premature rupture of membranes, one baby weighed 1,300 grams, while the other weighed only 800 grams and had to be put on a ventilator immediately after birth. On the 5th day, the baby suffered from intestinal perforation, peritonitis, and severe infection.

The baby was actively resuscitated by doctors at the Newborn Care Center, Central Maternity Hospital. After an inter-hospital consultation, doctors decided to perform surgery in the hope of saving the baby's life despite the baby's low weight and serious condition.
The child was transferred to Viet Duc Hospital for emergency surgery, abdominal lavage, and drainage of the perforated terminal ileum. After surgery, the child continued to be resuscitated at the Neonatal Care and Treatment Center, Central Maternity Hospital.
After 2 months, the baby was discharged from the hospital weighing 2.4 kg, after 5 months, the baby weighed 4 kg. In mid-January 2023, the family took the baby to Viet Duc Hospital to close both ends of the intestine. After 5 days of surgery, the baby was able to drink milk.
For a twin baby, 29 weeks pregnant, weighing only 800 grams, it was very difficult to feed, and the baby also suffered from a serious infection complication of premature newborns, which was peritonitis due to intestinal perforation.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Viet Hoa shared: During surgery, doctors must not only ensure ventilation, blood pressure, and heart rate, but also maintain body temperature to avoid hypothermia during surgery, which is a risk of death after surgery.
Recently, there have been many cases of premature infants with neonatal peritonitis that have been saved thanks to the coordination of care and surgery between two leading hospitals, the Central Maternity Hospital and Viet Duc Hospital.
