Racing on the construction site of the 500 kV Lao Cai - Vinh Yen transmission line

The rainy season has come, and contractors are speeding up the erection of steel poles on the 500 kV Lao Cai - Vinh Yen transmission line, working day and night to keep up with the schedule and ensure the safety of this key national project.

Do not leave the foundation pit waiting for columns.

Under the blazing sun, at the location of VT96 column (Viet Tien commune, Bao Yen district), workers of the construction team, belonging to the Electrical Construction One Member Co., Ltd. 4, are diligently assembling each steel structure, then using a winch to pull it up high. On the column body, 3 workers anchor themselves to the iron column to receive the components, start assembling and screwing. All operations are carried out quickly, meticulously and accurately. Just like that, hundreds of details and steel bars of all kinds are attached to the main column that stretches high.

From the position of VT96 column, looking about 300 meters away is the position of VT97 column that has just been erected, and on the other side of the Chay River is the position of VT98 column where another team has just finished pouring concrete for the foundation and started assembling the first columns.

Mr. Pham Van Quyen, Head of the Construction Team, said: Each team will arrange about 12 - 15 people, with the current installation progress, it will take about ten days to complete a pole. Before being present at the Lao Cai - Vinh Yen 500 kV project site, Mr. Quyen participated in the construction of power transmission line projects across the country, from the 500 kV circuit 3 Quang Trach - Pho Noi project through Ha Tinh , then continued to construct high voltage power transmission line projects in Binh Dinh and Son La.

Just at the end of last year, he was still at the construction site of the power transmission line from Laos to Vietnam through Quang Nam province. Mr. Quyen said: The location of VT96 pole is also the first pole he participated in the construction of this package. Although it is the hot season, compared to the implementation of projects in the Central region, this weather is nothing, the difficulty here is the complex terrain, difficult to access, the construction process mainly uses human power. To facilitate the construction, Mr. Quyen's team rented a nearby house as a camp; the workers often go to the construction site early in the morning and return late at night.

Package No. 2 mainly constructs pole positions in Bao Yen district. The construction started later than other packages along the route, so to keep up with the general progress, the contractor has arranged 9 construction teams for the entire package. Mr. Nguyen The Hien, Commander of Package No. 2, Power Construction One Member Co., Ltd. 4 said: Currently, Package No. 2 is simultaneously constructing 8 pole positions and as soon as the foundation is completed, the contractor will arrange to install the poles.

Mr. Hien said, drawing on experience from the implementation of the 500 kV circuit 3 project, when implementing the 500 kV Lao Cai - Vinh Yen project, the contractor will construct the entire project from the column foundation to the column erection.

Therefore, the construction unit will proactively work with steel column suppliers, and produce and supply steel columns at the construction site, so there will be no situation where the foundation has to wait for the columns, and construction will be done smoothly. Currently, the foundation locations are mainly installed with domestically produced V-steel columns. It is expected that after June 15, when the imported batch of pipe columns arrives, the contractor will arrange a total of 15 construction teams.

Taking us along the route, checking the installation of pole positions, Mr. Hien also participated in an online meeting with the Power Project Management Board 1, directly reporting the progress from the field.

Mr. Hien said that a difficulty had just arisen, which was that the VT84 column was stuck in the sandy soil, and they had to calculate a plan to move it to another location. Another concern was that the rainy season was approaching, and construction was at risk of being interrupted because vehicles carrying materials and equipment had difficulty accessing the construction site. "In the past few days, whenever we heard the weather forecast of rain, we were very anxious because if it rained for 1 day, we had to stop for 2 or 3 days before we could start construction because the service road was slippery," Mr. Hien shared.

Racing against the weather

At the location of pole VT19 in Coc Man village, Xuan Quang commune (Bao Thang), workers are urgently installing the lever arms, which are also the final structures to complete the electric pole.

Mr. Tran Cong Giang, from Ha Tinh, Head of the Column Erection Team, his face darkened by the sun and wind, read the drawings so that the workers in the team could choose the appropriate steel bars and then directly install them. The 12 workers each had a job, some on the ground, some erecting at height.

Mr. Giang said that in this hot weather, working on the ground is hard, but working up high is many times harder, because in addition to being exposed to the sun, they also have to endure the scorching heat from the steel bars as if they were being burned.

Mr. Giang's team has been at the construction site for about a month now, and the VT19 column is the third column his team has installed. There is a race between the teams at the construction site, because the better the progress, the more columns they will be assigned to install, the workers will have more work, and their income will also increase. The team has 12 people, each from a different hometown, far from home, the work is hard but everyone is determined to complete the task. After completing this column, the team will move to a new location.

At the VT16 pole location, we met Mr. Le Van Thuy, from Thanh Hoa, who is also a worker who has just returned from the construction of the 500 kV circuit 3 project. Mr. Thuy is in charge of operating the winch to lift the steel bars up high, the machine's roar echoes throughout the forest, when the rope is wound around the shaft, the steel bars are lifted up, slowly delivered to the workers on high. The VT16 pole is one of the pole locations that uses high-tech steel tubular poles, so it requires a skilled construction team. Mr. Thuy said that each segment of the main pole weighs up to 1.5 tons, so although steel tubular poles have fewer details than V-steel poles, the installation process is much more difficult.

In the context of the 500kV Lao Cai - Vinh Yen transmission line project entering the final stage, Power Project Management Board 1 mobilizes maximum human and material resources to ensure the progress and quality of the project.

Mr. Do Quang Khai, Deputy Director of Power Project Management Board 1 (Vietnam Electricity Group) said: Up to now, Power Project Management Board 1 has directed contractors to simultaneously deploy foundation construction along the entire route, with 236 locations having completed pouring concrete foundations, 156 locations under construction. All foundation concrete work was completed in early June. “We require contractors to erect poles and pull wires parallel to the foundations to avoid delays. Up to now, in the packages in Lao Cai alone, 25 locations have completed pole erection, 36 locations are under construction. The remaining locations are also speeding up the progress of transporting poles to the foundations for timely installation.”

Despite the urgent schedule, the Power Project Management Board 1 still prioritizes safety. Contractors are required to develop safety plans for the rainy and flood season, especially for locations at risk of landslides. “The Board also coordinates with local authorities to promptly complete compensation and site clearance of the route corridor, ensuring timely handover to the wire-pulling contractor,” Mr. Khai emphasized.
