On April 14, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam reported on the air transport situation during the peak period of Lunar New Year 2023, and the direction of preparation for the April 30 holiday and summer peak.

Accordingly, the total number of air passengers in the period from January 6 to February 5, 2023 will reach more than 10 million, an increase of 66.9% over the same period in 2022 and approximately equal to the number of passengers in the same period in 2020, right before the pandemic broke out.

In this context, the punctuality index of many airlines has dropped sharply. The average on-time performance (OTP) of the entire aviation industry during the peak period of Lunar New Year 2023 (January 6 - February 5, 2023) only reached 80.61%, a decrease compared to previous Tet periods. Looking back at previous years, during the Lunar New Year 2022 period (from January 19 to February 18, 2022), the industry's on-time performance still reached 86%, while during Lunar New Year 2020 (January 19 - February 18, 2020), the industry's OTP rate reached 85.3%.

Bamboo Airways is the airline that maintains an on-time flight rate of over 90%, with 92.81% of flights departing on time. The other two major airlines, Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air, recorded OTP rates of 84.87% and 75.06%, respectively. Vietravel Airlines has an OTP index of 83.79%, while Pacific Airlines only has 59.12% of flights on time.

Regarding the rate of flight delays and cancellations, the three airlines with the most delays/cancellations during the peak period of Tet 2023 are Pacific Airlines, Vietjet and VASCO, with rates of 40.88%, 24.94% and 19.56% respectively. The rate of flight delays and cancellations for the entire industry is 19.39%. Vietravel Airlines and Vietnam Airlines have lower rates of flight delays and cancellations with 16.21% and 15.13% of flights delayed and canceled, respectively. Bamboo Airways is the airline with the least delays/cancellations with a rate of 7.19%.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam stated that the industry's flight delay figures could improve significantly if Pacific Airlines' flight delay rate improved. "Pacific Airlines' flight delays were up to 39.87%, much higher than other airlines," the Authority's report stated.

In just over 3 weeks, the Vietnamese aviation industry will continue to welcome a new peak period, the April 30 – May 1 holiday. In order to meet the travel needs of the people, domestic airlines are simultaneously preparing plans to increase capacity during the upcoming peak period.

Specifically, Bamboo Airways plans to increase capacity by about 15%, Vietjet Air plans to increase capacity by 20%. Vietnam Airlines and VASCO plan to increase capacity by about 2,800 flights on domestic routes from April 26 to May 5. A representative of Pacific Airlines also confirmed plans to increase flights. A representative of Vietravel Airlines said they will continue to maintain the frequency of the current routes, while increasing flights on key routes to attract tourists./.
