Support 12,000 steel baskets, total force to clear road after landslide

(Chinhphu.vn) - Hundreds of large and small landslides continue to appear after the floods, causing many national highways in the Central Highlands to be cut off. The Ministry of Construction requires forces to be on duty 24/7, urgently mobilizing resources, materials and human resources to handle the scene, and soon resume traffic on key routes.

A quick report from the Ministry of Construction on the morning of November 27 said that there are currently 15 traffic jams on the national highways managed by localities, most concentrated on National Highway 27C and National Highway 20. In Khanh Hoa, National Highway 27C still has 12 jams due to landslides on steep terrain and saturated ground. Of these, 5 are old (3 have been opened to traffic) and 10 new ones have appeared. The forces aim to open the entire route to one lane before December 4.

In Lam Dong , there are still 3 traffic jams including 2 landslides on National Highway 20 (Mimosa Pass and D'Ran Pass area) and 1 location on National Highway 27C at Km65+800 - Km66+00.

Urgently provide 12,000 steel baskets to reinforce the project

Immediately after the disaster, the Ministry of Construction sent many working groups to heavily affected localities such as Da Nang , Quang Ngai, Gia Lai, Khanh Hoa, Dak Lak and Lam Dong to inspect the scene and direct response. Road management units maintained 24/7 duty, mobilizing maximum means and materials according to the "4 on-site" motto to quickly handle arising situations.

Despite continuous efforts, prolonged rain and floods have caused landslides and flooding in hundreds of locations, making some national highways unable to be completely reopened. The main congestion points are on National Highway 27C (Khanh Hoa, Lam Dong) and National Highway 20.

To support the locality, the Vietnam Road Administration has regulated spare materials, providing 12,000 steel baskets for the affected routes: Da Nang 5,000, Quang Ngai 2,000 and Lam Dong 5,000 steel baskets to urgently reinforce serious landslide locations. The Ministry of Construction requested close coordination with local Construction Departments, sending technical staff directly to the scene to propose sustainable reinforcement solutions, limiting landslide recurrence.

Vietnam Road Administration coordinated with the Department of Construction of Khanh Hoa and Lam Dong to handle serious landslides on National Highway 27C, dispatched specialized staff to support and research technical solutions to repair and reinforce sustainably, limiting landslide recurrence.

Quy Nhon - Chi Thanh and Chi Thanh - Van Phong expressways suffered heavy damage.

From Da Nang to Khanh Hoa, there are currently 5 key traffic projects, including 4 projects under construction (Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon, Hoai Nhon - Quy Nhon, Quy Nhon - Chi Thanh, Chi Thanh - Van Phong) expected to be completed on December 19, 2025 and 1 project put into operation (Van Phong - Nha Trang).

During the flood, although there were no human casualties, many projects under construction were severely affected. In particular, the Quy Nhon - Chi Thanh and Chi Thanh - Van Phong projects were flooded, damaging the operating house, camp, and concrete mixing station; the construction power system was widely lost; local workers had to take time off to deal with the consequences at home; quarries supplying materials had to temporarily stop; transportation roads were flooded and severely damaged.

Some locations experienced deep slope slides, causing cracks in the foundation, road surface, and affecting traffic safety. After the flood, contractors coordinated with local authorities in Tuy An and Dak Lak to conduct surveys and handle the situation to ensure long-term stability.

Mobilizing all forces to overcome landslides at Mimosa Pass

Currently, Gia Lai and Lam Dong have two renovation and upgrading projects, including National Highway 19 and the Mimosa Pass project on National Highway 20. Although there were no casualties, many items were greatly affected. On National Highway 19, the An Khe Pass section had to be closed due to the risk of landslides, but is now open to two-way traffic.

The most serious is the project through Mimosa Pass. On November 18, the negative slope section Km226+600 - Km226+800 sank and slid; by November 20, the entire roadbed and surface on this section were completely broken and slid, forming a hole nearly 15 m deep, about 50 m long, causing Mimosa Pass to be divided.

At the Suspension Bridge (Km262+500, National Highway 20), about 60,000 m³ of rock and soil slid onto the road surface, causing cracks and subsidence, shifting the retaining wall, paralyzing traffic. Many new cracks appeared on the top of the slope, continuing to develop, threatening the safety of the project.

Faced with that situation, the Ministry of Construction issued Decision 2105/QD-BXD declaring an emergency situation regarding natural disasters at Mimosa Pass, assigning relevant units to urgently issue orders to build emergency works, review and determine capital sources to submit to competent authorities.

For the Suspension Bridge, the Ministry assigned Project Management Board 85 to coordinate with Lam Dong Department of Construction to ensure temporary traffic safety, promptly handle the collapse, request the contractor to fulfill warranty responsibilities and the design unit to survey and propose a long-term solution.

Railways suffered heavy damage

By 9:00 p.m. on November 25, the entire railway line had been cleared. However, there were still some locations that had to run slowly, specifically as follows: From Km1211+800 to Km1215+300 (V = 5 km/h), from Km1215+300 to Km1219+850 (V = 15 km/h), temporary bridge Km1136+850 - Km1136+925 (V = 5 km/h). Currently, units are urgently reinforcing and repairing damage caused by rain and floods, ensuring the speed of the section is restored as quickly as possible.

According to Vietnam Railways Corporation, from November 16 to 25, the preliminary damage to the railway industry was 121.66 billion VND. Specifically, 65 passenger trains had to stop running; 1,755 passengers had to be transported by road; more than 18,000 free meals were provided.

Freight transport had to stop 33 specialized trains, cancel 44 trains; 76 freight cars were flooded; 3 locomotives had their undercarriages submerged. 16 stations were affected by flooding and equipment damage.

The railway industry mobilized nearly 1,000 workers and nearly 100 machines from 9 units to fix the problem, assigned forces to be on duty, inspected bridges and roads, and made timely repairs, thanks to which the route was reopened.
