A few weeks ago, Lexus announced the end of its LS full-size luxury sedan. Shortly thereafter, the brand revived the LS name, but not as a luxury four-door sedan, but as something much more exotic. More specifically, this long-standing luxury sedan will give way to a completely different product: a 6-wheel, 3-row, all-electric minivan full of experimental features. This concept car, called the Lexus LS Concept, has a design that is ahead of its time, if not a bit absurd.
But that's not even the craziest thing about this car. What's really surprising is that Lexus plans to develop the LS Concept into a commercial vehicle. In the "teaser" video released by Lexus, it can be seen that the LS Concept is equipped with large front wheels and two sets of smaller wheels at the rear. The car is designed with a single-compartment minivan style with short distances from the front of the car to the front axle and from the rear of the car to the rear axle while the wheelbase is quite long. The car even looks more massive than its elder brother Lexus LM which was developed based on Toyota Alphard.
In addition to the unusual wheel arrangement, the Lexus LS Concept also has other highlights, including vertical LED headlights and taillights that extend to the sides. Wide sliding doors open up to a spacious interior with a 3-row, 6-seat configuration. While the idea of a six-wheeled minivan may seem too crazy to be commercially viable, Toyota president Akio Toyoda insists it's more than just a design experiment. In a message two years ago, he challenged his team to reinvent Lexus' flagship. The six-wheel minivan is likely to use Lexus's all-new electric vehicle platform, aiming for smooth, quiet operation and high stability. However, bringing the six-wheel configuration to actual production will be a big challenge both in terms of technology and cost.
The appearance of the six-wheeled LS concept shows that Lexus is ready to leave behind old stereotypes and enter a new era of luxury cars. This concept can open up a completely different segment - where the boundaries between sedans, SUVs and minivans are erased, replaced by comfortable and intelligent "mobile spaces".
