'Safer with the Ministry of Public Security and Google' campaign officially launched

(Chinhphu.vn) - On the morning of May 26, the Department of Cyber ​​Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention (Ministry of Public Security) in collaboration with Google officially launched the campaign "Preventing online fraud - Safer with the Ministry of Public Security and Google". This is a strategic step in the effort to build a safe and healthy cyberspace in the context of increasingly sophisticated and widespread online fraud in Vietnam.

Nearly 12,000 billion VND will be defrauded online in 2024

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Ba Son, Deputy Director of the Department of Cyber ​​Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention, affirmed: "Raising awareness is a key factor in preventing and combating online fraud. To achieve this, it requires the synchronous participation of all parties, especially large technology enterprises operating in Vietnam."

He emphasized that this campaign demonstrates autonomy, determination and responsible coordination between authorities, businesses and social organizations in protecting citizens in cyberspace and creating a safe and healthy digital environment.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Public Security , in 2024, authorities detected more than 6,000 cases of cyber fraud, with total losses of more than 12,000 billion VND.

A recent survey also showed that 70% of Vietnamese people have been exposed to at least one scam call or text message each month. These alarming figures raise an urgent need to popularize cyber security knowledge to all classes of people.

Google: Data and technology are weapons against cybercrime

On Google’s side, Mr. Marc Woo, General Director of Google Vietnam, said that a safe cyberspace is an indispensable foundation for the sustainable development of the digital economy . Google is committed to using technology, data and global capacity to support the Vietnamese Government and people in preventing cybercrime.  

According to Mr. Woo, Google Play alone has blocked more than 4.5 million installations of applications suspected of containing malware on more than 1 million Android devices in Vietnam.

Not stopping at technical support, from 2021 to now, Google has deployed many digital education programs in Vietnam, such as "I'm safer with Google", "Safe online, happy life" for children and the elderly. Most recently, at the end of 2024, Google cooperated with the Department of Information Security ( Ministry of Information and Communications ) to launch the "Official Government Application" initiative to authenticate state software on Google Play, preventing the risk of fake and fraudulent applications.

The "Safer with the Ministry of Public Security and Google" campaign is a large-scale campaign focusing on digital communication and mass education. According to the plan, more than 200 YouTube content creators will participate in conveying messages on identifying scams through short, user-friendly videos. At the same time, a series of 8 in-depth educational videos jointly produced by experts from Google and the Ministry of Public Security will provide practical knowledge about 7 common forms of scams today.

At the ceremony, Colonel Nguyen Huy Luc, Head of Department 5, Department of Cyber ​​Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention, pointed out 7 forms of fraud that are increasing in Vietnam, including: Impersonating educational institutions, recovering suspended capital, service payment fraud, online shopping and travel fraud, impersonating state agency officials, financial exploitation fraud, and investment through fake platforms.

To respond effectively, he also proposed five key solutions: Perfecting the legal system; strengthening investigation and handling of criminal networks; expanding international cooperation; promoting the application of technology in crime prevention; raising public awareness through communication and education.

The "Safer with the Ministry of Public Security and Google" campaign is a clear demonstration of a multi-sectoral, multi-partner approach to protecting cyberspace. Through specific, practical activities, the campaign is expected to contribute to minimizing the risk of online fraud, while creating a solid foundation for every Vietnamese citizen and business to fully exploit their digital potential in a safe and trustworthy environment.
