Today (June 26), Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Hoang Trung chaired a working session on the Low Emission Crop Production Project for the 2025-2030 period.
This project will guide central and local units in implementation, in which the emission reduction farming process and measurement tools are important factors when developing a project for emission reduction crop production.
Nguyen Thi Thu Huong, Deputy Director of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, said that some of the draft goals of this project are: Striving to reduce 30% of total CH4 emissions and at least 10% of total greenhouse gas emissions from the crop sector by 2030 compared to the baseline year 2020, through applying technical measures suitable for each ecological region and crop group.
By 2030, the area applying emission-reducing cultivation measures will reach at least 2.5 million hectares, with priority given to concentrated commodity production areas.
Establish a database of greenhouse gas emissions in crop cultivation by crop, ecological region and technical measures, contributing to the formation of a carbon market.
Develop a system of communication documents, disseminate knowledge, and promote the transformation of farmers' production behavior towards low emissions. Organize training on techniques, policies, and emission measurement tools for technical staff, agricultural extension officers, and farmers nationwide.
According to Deputy Minister Hoang Trung, reducing emissions in crop production is part of the country's overall policy of reducing net emissions to zero by 2050. However, this field has only stopped at a number of small projects and programs, lacking fundamental and systematic nature.
The leader of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment said that the current problem in reducing emissions in crop production is the lack of a legal framework, no measurement tools and the limited awareness of the majority of people, businesses and local officials about reducing emissions in crop production. The Deputy Minister emphasized: "Reducing emissions in crop production needs to aim at serving the obligations to NDC, changing farming practices towards reducing the use of inputs, being sustainable and environmentally friendly, building a brand of low-emission agricultural products to spread the responsibility of the crop production industry towards the environment and future generations".
"Many subjects of the crop production industry, especially fruit trees and long-term industrial crops, also have the ability to absorb CO2, so it is necessary to calculate the difference between emissions and absorption, calculate emissions in each stage, and thereby develop a suitable and effective production process," Mr. Hoang Trung emphasized.
Accordingly, changing farming processes and reducing the amount of inputs will be the key to reducing emissions in farming. Regarding the roadmap, the Deputy Minister said that we should focus on some main crops, especially rice, and do it systematically before expanding to other subjects.
Deputy Minister Hoang Trung emphasized that it is necessary to clarify that Vietnam has been and is producing crops in a way that reduces emissions. From there, propaganda should be stepped up to raise people's awareness of this policy.
"Participating in emission reduction production is not only a responsible contribution of people to the National NDC but also contributes to building the brand of Vietnamese agricultural products, reducing input costs to help improve economic efficiency," affirmed the leader of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.
When both regulators and farmers achieve the goal of reducing emissions in farming, we will attract more attention, participation and resources from international organizations.
