When Dong Nai farmers become "digital scientists" in the fields

In recent years, Dong Nai has witnessed a wave of strong innovation among farmers. From the mini durian initiative of Mr. Ngo Thanh Phong, the seed sowing machine of Mr. Nguyen Cong Chinh, to the super-intensive shrimp farming model of Mr. Nguyen Truong Dai.

Farmers have proven that they are not only producers, but also "digital scientists" right in the fields. The application of science and technology and digital transformation has helped reduce costs, increase productivity, enhance the value of agricultural products and create smart, sustainable agriculture .

In Hang Gon commune, Long Khanh city, Mr. Ngo Thanh Phong, who has been awarded the title of excellent farmer at the provincial level for many years, has pioneered the creation of a mini durian model. When the tree is 1m high, he cuts the top to create secondary branches close to the base. When mature, the tree is kept at a height of 3.5m, with a canopy diameter of only about 3.5m. Thanks to that, each hectare can grow nearly 300 trees, twice as much as the traditional method.

During the fruiting process, the garden owner only keeps about 60 fruits per tree, ensuring export standards. As a result, 1 hectare yields over 40 tons, nearly double the old model. Not keeping the initiative to himself, Mr. Phong also established a high-tech agricultural service team, specializing in supporting farmers from planting, care, pest control to harvesting. Hundreds of hectares of mini durian have been replicated throughout Long Khanh and neighboring areas.

This model not only increases productivity, but also reduces costs for labor, fertilizers, and pesticides. The trees are short, making care easier and reducing the risk of breakage due to storms. After 2 years, the trees bear fruit, and the third year yields high yields. This is a typical example of applying science and technology to solve the problem of climate adaptation and natural disasters.

Farmers become scientists

Not only cultivation, the livestock and aquaculture sectors in Dong Nai have also witnessed many breakthroughs. In livestock farming, Long Thanh Phat High-Tech Agricultural Cooperative has built large-scale farms using closed industrial technology. Members in the chain from breeding and feed production enterprises to processing enterprises have together created a modern ecosystem. This not only improves productivity but also ensures food hygiene and safety.

In aquaculture, Mr. Nguyen Truong Dai in Nhon Trach district has applied a super-intensive shrimp farming model with ponds lined with canvas and covered with orchid nets to maintain ideal temperatures. He uses probiotics instead of antibiotics, helping to control diseases and ensure biosafety. Thanks to that, the stocking density is many times higher, 4-5 crops per year instead of 1-2 crops, increasing economic efficiency many times over.

These initiatives demonstrate that farmers are not just followers but have become creators of technology. They explore, experiment, and then improve to suit production practices.

Digital technology accompanies the fields

Dong Nai currently has about 1,000 hectares of bananas and rice sprayed with drones, nearly 149 hectares of crops using greenhouse and net house technology, and more than 70,000 hectares using smart, energy-saving irrigation systems.

Mr. Nguyen Cong Chinh in Xuan Loc has successfully manufactured a seed thinning machine that won first prize in the 2023 Science and Technology Advancement Application Competition for Excellent Farmers. The machine can sow all types of seeds on many terrains, with a structure of 6 double rows, sowing more than 1 hectare per day, equivalent to 10 workers working for 2 days. The accuracy is nearly 100%, reducing labor costs by 1/3.

In Cam My district, the Chinh Duc Durian Cooperative Group invested in drones to spray pesticides and fertilize. In addition to serving its members, the group also provides services to farmers in the surrounding area. Mr. Tran Van Duc, the group leader, also created a technique of grafting 3 roots and 1 top for durian, helping the tree to be strong, have deep roots, and be less likely to break during storms.

In Nhon Trach, a group of farmers, Nguyen Van Linh and Duong Thi Nuong, came up with the idea of using chlorine gas to treat shrimp farming water, instead of chlorine powder. This method is cheaper, more effective, and chlorine gas evaporates quickly, helping the water source become safe for shrimp soon.

Spreading the spirit of innovation

Not stopping at individuals, Dong Nai province also launched the movement "Farmers start-up - innovation", encouraging members to participate in the contest "Farmers' technical innovation", "Start-up innovation". In the period of 2021-2025, the Provincial Farmers' Association coordinated with the Department of Science and Technology to organize dozens of competitions, with hundreds of initiatives participating. In 2024 alone, there were 40 participating solutions, 17 of which won prizes.

According to statistics, Dong Nai currently has nearly 28% of livestock farms using cold barns and closed barns; 65% of pigs and 49% of chickens are raised using high technology. This is a very high rate compared to the national average.

Towards smart agriculture and digital economy

Innovative farmer models in Dong Nai do not stop at technical improvements, but are moving towards applying digital technology. Electronic diaries to record the farming process, creating transparency for traceability. QR codes attached to products, helping consumers trace the origin from the farm. Automating the process from planting, irrigation to harvesting, helping to reduce costs and labor.

When these models are replicated, Dong Nai will not only have "billionaire farmers" but also "digital farmers", contributing to bringing local agriculture in a modern and sustainable direction./.
