Ministry of Science and Technology issues new classification table of science and technology fields

The Minister of Science and Technology signed Circular No. 24/2025/TT-BKHCN promulgating the Classification Table of science and technology fields.

According to this Circular, the classification table is built according to a hierarchical structure including: field, industry, specialty, and sub-industry.

The classification table of science and technology fields is used to serve the work of science and technology statistics; combined with other classification tables to serve the work of socio -economic statistics and other purposes.

Science and technology management agencies use it to monitor, supervise, and evaluate activities in the fields of science and technology, allocate resources, and plan strategies and policies.

The Ministry of Science and Technology issued the Classification Table of science and technology fields.

The Circular clearly states that the contents of the Classification Table of science and technology fields include:

1- Level 1 code includes 6 fields of science and technology coded from 1 to 6, including: 1. Natural sciences; 2. Science and technology; 3. Medical and pharmaceutical sciences; 4. Agricultural sciences; 5. Social sciences; 6. Humanities.

2- Level 2 codes include 46 science and technology sectors, formed according to each corresponding level 1 code and each sector is coded with three digits from 101 to 699.

3- Level 3 codes include 328 research majors, formed according to each corresponding level 2 code and each major is coded with five digits from 10101 to 60499.

4- Level 4 codes include 1780 research sub-fields, formed according to each corresponding level 3 code and each field is coded with seven digits from 1010101 to 6040799.

This Circular takes effect from December 15, 2025. From this point of time, Decision No. 12/2008/QD-BKHCN dated September 4, 2008 on promulgating a number of scientific and technological statistical classification tables ceases to be effective.
