According to Kyodo, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said that tsunami waves up to 1 meter high could hit Iwate province due to the earthquake that occurred at 5:03 p.m. (local time), off the coast of Sanriku, at a depth of about 10 kilometers.
The earthquake registered at level 4 on Japan's seismic intensity scale (maximum level 7) in some areas of Iwate and Miyagi prefectures.
Authorities urged people at sea to immediately go ashore and stay away from coastal areas. The JMA advised against approaching the sea or coastal areas until the warning is lifted.
