Expect the country's largest city to rise with a million-dollar commercial area

From July 1, an important milestone will be recorded in history when Da Nang city and Quang Nam province officially merge, forming the new Da Nang city. This is not only an administrative change, but also a strategic turning point that will shape the future development of the Central Central region and the whole country.

The largest city in the country "back to the mountain, facing the sea"

The merger of Da Nang city and Quang Nam province is considered by many to be a strategic turning point in economic development, especially tourism, when a "super city" is formed, where both cultural depth and modern development potential converge.

The new Da Nang city has a "transformation" in terms of natural space with an area of nearly 12,000km2, a population of more than 3 million people, and 94 commune-level administrative units. Da Nang will become the largest urban area among the 6 centrally-run cities.

There are not many localities in Vietnam that possess a rich list of tourism resources like the new city of Da Nang. This land also gathers 2 World Cultural Heritages (Hoi An ancient town, My Son temple complex), a World Biosphere Reserve (Cu Lao Cham) and many famous places such as Ngu Hanh Son, Ba Na Hills, My Khe beach - once honored as one of the most attractive beaches on the planet.

Not only that, traditional craft villages and intangible cultural heritage, to unique street food... are bringing special advantages in developing cultural and community tourism. The connection between these destinations will create a new, attractive and diverse tourist map for domestic and foreign tourists.

In addition to its traditional advantages, Da Nang also has the potential to develop a high-end pharmaceutical industry with Ngoc Linh ginseng growing areas, known as the "national treasure". The new Da Nang city not only expands its geographical space but also creates a complete transport infrastructure network with National Highway 1A, Da Nang - Quang Ngai Expressway, North - South railway system with 3 major stations, 2 international airports (Da Nang, Chu Lai), 3 international seaports (Tien Sa, Chu Lai and Lien Chieu under construction), and Nam Giang international border gate connecting to the Mekong sub-region.

With the above potentials and advantages, Da Nang city is not only a gateway to the sea, but also a strategic transit point between key economic regions of the Central region and the whole country.

The only city with a million dollar mall

One of the breakthrough highlights is the Da Nang Free Trade Zone, announced by the Government to be established with a scale of nearly 1,900 hectares, spread over Lien Chieu and Hoa Vang districts. This will be a model integrating logistics, trade, industrial processing, services and other supporting functions.

The goal is that by 2030, the Free Trade Zone will directly contribute 1-2% of Da Nang's GRDP, by 2040 it will be 9.5% and by 2050 it will be 17.9%. The number of workers attracted by 2030 will be about 21,000 people, by 2040 it will be about 90,000 people and by 2050 it will be 127,000 people.

This commercial area is expected to require capital of up to 40,000 billion VND, divided into 2 investment phases.

Speaking at the decision-giving ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Hoa Binh, Permanent Deputy Prime Minister, affirmed that the pilot of the Da Nang Free Trade Zone is a bold initiative, demonstrating the strategic vision of the city's leaders.

“This is a very commendable initiative of Da Nang and the Government has decided to choose Da Nang as the starting point. When this Free Trade Zone is successful, it will be a boost to connect the global economy, promoting development not only for Da Nang today but also for Da Nang in the future, the whole region and the country,” the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized.

In addition to the Free Trade Zone, Da Nang City was also assigned by the Politburo to establish a regional financial center. The financial center will apply a special management mechanism, superior to current regulations, and be competitive, but must be accompanied by appropriate monitoring and risk management mechanisms.

To date, the city has received interest from more than 10 investors. Of these, 3 joint ventures of investors Makara Capital, Terne Holding, Trump Organization, have expressed interest and desire to be selected as strategic investors.

At the 24th session of the 10th People's Council of Da Nang City, term 2021-2026, Mr. Nguyen Van Quang, Secretary of the Da Nang City Party Committee, said that after 28 years of separation for development, the city has now come under one roof with Quang Nam province and is one of the localities with the greatest advantages in the merger process.

The new Da Nang City will operate from July 1st, this is a major historical event with special significance, an opportunity to expand space and develop strongly.

At the 33rd session of the People's Council of Quang Nam province, term X, 2021-2026, Mr. Luong Nguyen Minh Triet, Secretary of the Quang Nam Provincial Party Committee, emphasized that the merger of the province is not simply a matter of arranging the organizational apparatus, but more importantly, this is an opportunity to optimize the resources, potential and advantages of both Quang Nam province and Da Nang city.

The goal of this is to expand development space, creating a quick and sustainable breakthrough in the coming time.

“The new Da Nang city is expected and positioned as an important growth pole of the country; a financial, economic, socio-cultural center, a center of science, technology and innovation, a logistics center, posing many opportunities for us in the coming time,” Mr. Luong Nguyen Minh Triet expressed.

Continuing the brand "livable city"

Da Nang City has long been known as a “livable city” with humane policies such as the “5 no, 3 yes, 4 safe” program, free tuition for all levels, care for the disadvantaged and preferential treatment for people with revolutionary contributions. This policy is expected to be applied after the merger.

Combining resources between the two localities also helps improve healthcare and education, narrow the service gap between urban and rural areas, and ensure that all people have access to better learning and medical treatment conditions.

In the new Da Nang city, hospitals are aiming for special standards when combined with Quang Nam resources to improve the health capacity of the entire region. Da Nang University Village and a synchronous education system will help train high-quality human resources, linked to the needs of regional development.

Hero of labor in the renovation period, former National Assembly Delegate of the 8th term, Chairman of the University Council - Duy Tan University Le Cong Co acknowledged that when merging, the problem that Da Nang did not have was area, now it has been solved. The problem that Quang Nam did not have was human resources, now it has.

"This is an opportunity for both to develop together," Mr. Co emphasized and expected that the two localities "coming together" will develop strongly, attracting talented people to work in a favorable environment.

Speaking at the ceremony to celebrate the 95th anniversary of the founding of the Da Nang City Party Committee (March 28, 1930 - March 28, 2025) and the 50th anniversary of the city's Liberation Day (March 29, 1975 - March 29, 2025), General Secretary To Lam emphasized that, along with economic development, the Da Nang City Party Committee and government must pay special attention to cultural and human development.

The city must continue to effectively implement social security policies, care for people's lives, and combine them with the city's own humane programs.

“All policies and strategies must stem from the aspirations, legitimate interests and happiness of the people, aiming to make the city livable not only for the people but also for investors, talented people and the elite,” General Secretary To Lam emphasized.
