Adjusting car rearview mirrors properly helps reduce blind spots

1. Structure of car rearview mirror

Each car usually has 3 rearview mirrors: 2 exterior rearview mirrors and 1 interior rearview mirror. Car rearview mirrors consist of the following parts: Mirror base mounted on the car body; mirror cover attached to the mirror base and rotating motor; mirror surface helps the car owner observe the image on both sides of the car and behind.

In addition, some types of mirrors also have some other details, depending on the features that come with the mirror. For example, manual adjustment mirrors, electric adjustment mirrors, etc.

2. Why do you need to adjust your car's rearview mirror?

The rearview mirror was invented to help the car owner quickly observe the rear and sides of the car through the mirror without having to turn around to look. To observe well and drive safely, the car owner needs to adjust the 3 rearview mirrors so that they can expand their vision, also known as the blind spot behind and on the side of the car.

Adjusting the rearview mirror on the car depends on the body shape of each person. Therefore, each time the driver changes, the rearview mirror needs to be adjusted to suit each person's vision. In addition, during the movement of the car, it is inevitable that the car will vibrate and collide, causing the rearview mirror to move from its original position. Therefore, at this time, the car owner needs to adjust the car's rearview mirror.

3. How to adjust the rearview mirror properly

3.1. Center mirror

Because it is located in the middle position inside the car, the driver only needs to adjust the lever to the direction that can observe the entire rear windshield. Note, before adjusting the rearview mirror in the car, the driver's seat must be returned to the normal position, adjusted so that the rearview mirror in the car is in a position opposite the center of the rear window. In addition, if you want a wide viewing angle, the car owner should equip a large middle mirror.

To be safe, after adjusting the mirror, the driver should actually drive the vehicle to check if the field of vision is complete and blind spots are corrected.

3.2. Side mirrors

For the side mirrors, the adjustment is more complicated than the center mirror. To adjust the side mirrors effectively, there are 2 common ways to set the mirrors:

Method 1: Adjust the mirror to a narrow viewing angle

Step 1: Adjust the left and right side mirrors vertically (up and down) so that the bottom edge of the mirror can see half of the front door handle.

Step 2: Adjust horizontally (in and out) so that the side image of the car occupies 1/4 of the horizontal width in the mirror, the side image near the rear of the car occupies the remaining 3/4.

Step 3: Adjust the center rearview mirror so that the rear window image is in the center of the mirror.

Advantage: This method helps the driver to have a good view of the side of the car as well as the vehicles behind.

Disadvantages: Because it is mainly concentrated at the rear of the car, there is a fairly large blind spot on the body of the car. This makes it difficult for the driver to observe vehicles moving parallel to the side when turning or changing lanes. In addition, when adjusting the mirror this way, because the mirror is facing inward (narrow angle), the image in the outside rearview mirror is likely to overlap with the center rearview mirror.

Method 2: Adjust the mirror to have a wide viewing angle

Step 1: The driver tilts his head to touch the side of the car, adjusting the driver's side rearview mirror to cover the entire rear quadrant of the driver's side.

Step 2: The driver leans toward the center of the vehicle and adjusts the passenger side mirror so that it covers the entire rear quadrant of the passenger side.

Step 3: Adjust the center rearview mirror so that the rear window image is in the center of the mirror.

Adjusting the mirror to a wide angle helps to reduce the blind spot behind the car. However, this method has the disadvantage of being inconvenient when reversing.
