On the morning of November 28, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee held a ceremony to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam - New Zealand diplomatic relations at the Army Theater.
The ceremony was attended by New Zealand Ambassador to Vietnam - Ms. Caroline Beresford, New Zealand Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City - Mr. Scott James, members of the consular delegation, businesses and New Zealand citizens living in Vietnam.
On the side of Ho Chi Minh City leaders, the event was attended by Mr. Nguyen Van Duoc - Member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee; representatives of the City Party Committee, People's Committee, Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City and representatives of departments, branches, unions, armed forces of Ho Chi Minh City,...

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Van Duoc said that the 50-year journey of Vietnam - New Zealand relations is a "long journey of trust, sharing and sustainable values that the two peoples pursue together".

“The 50-year journey proves that geographical distance is never a barrier for countries that share the same ideals of peace , humanity and sustainable development. From the early challenging days to today’s comprehensive cooperation, the two countries have always accompanied each other with understanding, respect and trust,” said Mr. Duoc.
The Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee recalled the event of the two countries upgrading their diplomatic relations to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in February this year, calling it "a strategic development step, opening up a framework for extensive cooperation, from economy and smart agriculture, to education; science - technology, climate change response and people-to-people exchange - areas that reflect the spirit of comprehensive cooperation between the two countries".
According to Mr. Duoc, Ho Chi Minh City is proud to always be a pioneer in Vietnam - New Zealand cooperation.
“The city is a trusted destination for New Zealand educational institutions, businesses and experts, and is also a place to form practical cooperation initiatives, especially in education, trade and green development,” Mr. Duoc added.
Mr. Duoc mentioned Ho Chi Minh City with its expanded vision and space after merging its borders with Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau as an opportunity to promote cooperation with New Zealand as well as other partners.
“With the solid foundation that has been built, I believe that the Vietnam - New Zealand relationship will continue to develop deeply and extensively, bringing about substantial and sustainable benefits, while also creating many opportunities for effective cooperation between Ho Chi Minh City and New Zealand partners,” said Mr. Duoc.
Also at the ceremony, New Zealand Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City - Mr. Scott James said that Ho Chi Minh City is the center of cooperation between New Zealand and Vietnam.

“As the country’s commercial and innovation hub, Ho Chi Minh City is often the first point of contact for New Zealand businesses entering the Vietnamese market. The city’s dynamic business environment and openness to international cooperation have made it a priority destination for New Zealand exporters, investors and tourists,” said Mr. James.
Mr. James said that the bilateral trade turnover has increased from 476 million USD in 2010 to nearly 1.3 billion USD today, which is a testament to the mutual strengths and common commitment of the two countries.
“Looking to the future, New Zealand is committed to strengthening its economic partnership with Vietnam, setting an ambitious target of reaching US$3 billion in bilateral trade by the end of 2026,” according to the New Zealand Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City.
The ceremony to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and New Zealand also featured performances by artists from Vietnam and New Zealand with performances imbued with the identities of the two nations.
