Not yet happy about the holiday but sad again because of sky high plane tickets

"Airfares are really expensive these days. A few families were planning to go to Nha Trang, thinking that even if the ticket price increased, it would only be over 2 million VND/round trip, but it turned out to be 4-5 million VND" - Mr. An Thuyen (living in Hanoi ) exclaimed after receiving "cancellation" notices from close families who had excitedly planned to go on vacation for the April 30 - May 1 holidays last week.

Domestic airfares are "hot" all year round

At the end of November last year, Mr. Thuyen's family organized a trip to Nha Trang - Da Lat, buying round-trip air tickets from Hanoi to Nha Trang for just over 1.4 million VND/person. He knew that during the holiday season, ticket prices would increase, but he didn't think that flying around April 28 and returning on May 2, booking tickets a month in advance, the cheapest would cost nearly 5 million VND/person/round-trip ticket. There were many flights but the ticket prices were sky-high.

Trying to postpone the trip until around June to see if buying tickets many months in advance would get him a cheaper ticket, Mr. Thuyen sighed and gave up because from the beginning of June to almost the end of July, the ticket price was never lower than 4 million VND.

"Those are the cheapest flights, not good now. I asked a friendly ticket office to find cheaper tickets, but they told me that there are no cheap tickets this year. It's hard to find tickets under 2 million VND during the low season like last year, let alone during the peak holiday and summer. Not to mention the destinations are crowded and expensive. I'd rather stay home and gather or take the car somewhere nearby to save money," said Mr. An Thuyen.

According to a survey on the online ticketing site Abay, most airfares to famous domestic tourist destinations have begun to skyrocket, lasting from the peak holiday season of April 30 - May 1 to the peak summer season (June - August). For example, from Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc on April 28, returning on May 3, if choosing the most economical early morning or late night flight of Vietjet, "travel enthusiasts" will have to pay more than 4 million VND for a round-trip ticket; if choosing Vietnam Airlines , it will be over 4.2 million VND.

The lowest ticket price from Hanoi/HCMC to Da Nang during the holiday season of Vietjet is over 4.2 million VND/round trip; Bamboo Airways is nearly 5 million VND for the same-day flight; while if you buy Vietnam Airlines, the price is over 5.2 million VND, the same as the ticket price during the Lunar New Year. In fact, on these days, the tickets are the same for all time slots, not much different.

With the same mentality of not wanting to go out on holidays to avoid crowds, many workers in Ho Chi Minh City also find it difficult to take advantage of the long holiday to go to the North and return home to visit their families because ticket prices for the Ho Chi Minh City - Hanoi route are increasing as high as Tet tickets.

On Friday (April 28), nearly 20 flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi by Vietnam Airlines had the same price of nearly 3.1 million VND/way, regardless of whether they flew from 5am, 11pm or chose a good time from 10am to 3pm. Pacific Airlines tickets were also more than 3 million VND/way; Bamboo Airways had more than 10 flights with the same price of more than 2.9 million VND/way; the airline that usually had the cheapest tickets was Vietravel Airlines but also increased the price to nearly 2.7 million VND/way.

Explaining the sky-high airfare prices, an airline representative said that the current high airfare prices are not necessarily due to the sudden increase in travel demand from tourists, but mainly because airlines have not increased the supply of tickets during peak season. At this time, some families have planned their holidays and bought tickets, but there are few flights, low-priced fares have been sold out, so only high-priced tickets remain. With flights departing from Ho Chi Minh City being larger routes, the load is higher, so holiday ticket prices are not "hot".
