Over the years, the restructuring of crop patterns, coupled with the application of high technology, has been actively implemented by farmers in various localities. This has resulted in the production of clean, high-quality agricultural products, linked to production networks. This is considered an inevitable trend, helping agricultural production develop significantly and thereby changing the agricultural landscape of the province.
The model involves converting inefficient peanut farming land to growing melons in greenhouses in Nga Thach commune (Nga Son district).
As one of the localities with potential for agricultural development, Nga Son district has a large area of greenhouse and net house production, with over 43 hectares combined with water-saving irrigation for the production of vegetables, fruits, and flowers concentrated in the communes of Nga Giap, Nga Thanh, Nga Bach, Nga Phuong, Nga Trung, etc., with a cultivation value of 700 million to 1 billion VND/hectare/year.
The district has directed communes and towns to create favorable conditions and support people in consolidating and concentrating land, transforming crop structures, and replicating models applying science and technology and high-tech agriculture. In addition, it has actively implemented the transfer of science and technology, guided people in applying it in practice, and created favorable conditions to attract businesses to invest in agriculture, forming a production-to-chain linkage. According to calculations, many models after transformation have brought in income 2 to 3 times higher than traditional production.
Mr. Nguyen Van Nam from Nga Thach commune said that in 2018, when he first conceived the idea of developing high-tech agriculture, he spent a lot of time researching, learning, visiting, and studying greenhouse production models in the province. Afterward, he decided to rent over 2 hectares of land previously used for peanuts and corn to convert it into safe melon cultivation, mainly Kim Hoang Hau melons and netted melons. On the converted land, he invested in building greenhouses and netted structures designed to maximize sunlight, minimize the impact of weather and pests; and installed a drip irrigation system using Israeli technology to minimize labor costs and standardize the production process. In addition, the planting and care process strictly adheres to clean production methods, using only organic microbial fertilizers and biological pesticides to ensure optimal plant growth. From its initial products of cantaloupe and honeydew melon, the farm has now expanded to 4 hectares, growing additional crops such as flowers, grapes, fruit trees, and beekeeping.
Recognizing that restructuring crop patterns with the application of high technology is the main and essential direction for enhancing the competitiveness of agriculture and building a sustainable agricultural system, localities with agricultural development potential such as Thieu Hoa, Tho Xuan, Yen Dinh, Dong Son, Thach Thanh, Nhu Xuan... have formed many high-tech agricultural production models such as Kim Hoang Hau melon, cantaloupe, baby cucumber, safe vegetables, flowers... Models that switch to growing melons and fruit trees according to VietGAP and organic standards can bring in annual revenue of 600 million VND/hectare or more.
According to Le Tien Dat, Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Nhu Xuan District: From the converted land area, the district has encouraged and guided people to plant high -economic- value fruit trees such as guava, oranges, pomelo, passion fruit, and mangoes... grown according to VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards... In many areas, production is linked with businesses for guaranteed product sales.
To ensure the effective transformation of crop structure associated with the development of high-tech agriculture, the agricultural sector and localities in the province have been actively selecting new crop varieties suitable to local soil conditions; focusing on forming concentrated, large-scale production areas linked to market demand. In addition, they encourage people to build high-tech agricultural models, boldly invest in greenhouses and net houses with modern irrigation systems linked to processing and preservation... At the same time, the agricultural sector is also strengthening the transfer and application of science and technology and agricultural extension; mechanization, introducing advanced processes into production and processing; promoting the application of VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards in agricultural production. Furthermore, they encourage and create favorable conditions for businesses and cooperatives to implement chain-linked models and apply high-tech agriculture to improve production efficiency, increase productivity, quality, and product competitiveness.
