On the afternoon of October 31, the medical conference "Update on the significance of testing in diagnosis and treatment" took place successfully at Bac Giang Lung Hospital, with the participation of experts and many doctors in the province.

Microbiological testing – An effective solution in diagnosing pneumonia

At the beginning of the program, Dr. Tran Huu Dat presented a report on "The value of microbiological tests in diagnosing pneumonia".
The report provides specific data and introduces advanced methods in microbiological testing, an important tool to support accurate diagnosis of lung diseases. The content includes the following sections:
- Classification of pathogens causing pneumonia: Pneumonia can be caused by a variety of bacteria, ranging from typical bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae, commonly found in community-acquired pneumonia, to atypical bacteria such as Legionella pneumophila and Mycoplasma pneumoniae. Agents such as Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa can also cause severe pneumonia, especially in immunocompromised patients, with higher incidence in the elderly and children.
- Application of PCR and MGIT culture: The report highlighted PCR technology (Realtime PCR) with a sensitivity of up to 99%, allowing the detection of bacterial and viral agents without the need for antibiotic susceptibility testing, helping to quickly identify the cause of the disease. MGIT culture technology, especially effective in detecting tuberculosis and non-tuberculosis bacteria (NTM), shortens the diagnostic time from weeks to days, significantly improving the treatment process.
- Specimen statistics and sampling procedures: According to the report, sputum and bronchial lavage samples are the most common specimens for respiratory bacterial testing, with the sputum sample having the highest positive rate. Dr. Dat also emphasized the correct sampling procedure to ensure the accuracy of the test and avoid contamination, paying special attention to the requirements for preserving the sample at standard temperature during transportation to the laboratory.
Biomarkers and Pathology in Diagnosis and Treatment of Lung Cancer
After the first report with practical knowledge about microbiological testing in diagnosing pneumonia, the conference moved on to the second report presented by Dr. Nguyen Van Tuan.

With the theme “Application of biomarkers and pathology in diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer”, the report opens up important directions in the application of biomarkers and pathology methods, aiming to enhance the effectiveness of diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer – a major challenge of modern medicine. The main contents include:
- Lung cancer markers: With the high rate of late detection of lung cancer in Vietnam (80% detected at late stages), the report introduced markers such as CYFRA 21-1 for non-small cell lung cancer and SCC-Ag specifically for squamous cell lung cancer. In addition, ProGRP and NSE were also emphasized as important markers for small cell lung cancer, helping to monitor the patient's condition after treatment.
- Application of pathology and cytology: Through histopathology samples and immunohistochemistry techniques, MEDLATEC experts can accurately diagnose the type of lung cancer, thereby guiding treatment. Immunohistochemistry techniques help detect markers such as TTF1 and Napsin A, supporting the determination of the origin of lung cancer and helping to distinguish metastatic cases, thereby providing appropriate treatment options.
- Illustrated through typical cases: The report mentioned a number of cases at MEDLATEC to demonstrate the effectiveness of biomarkers in cancer diagnosis. In particular, a 59-year-old female patient was diagnosed with stage IIA lung cancer through CEA and CYFRA 21-1 tests.
