Story of the first student from Quang Tri to win national first prize

Việt NamViệt Nam03/09/2024

Principal of Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted, Nguyen Hoai Nam, said that the school has many talented students, but the person who had the honor of becoming the first student from Quang Tri province to win first prize in the national excellent student contest was student Nguyen Thi Xuan Nhan, in the 1994-1995 school year.

In the school's achievement report preparing to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the school's founding (1994-2024) and 35 years of the specialized system (1989-2024), the name of student Nguyen Thi Xuan Nhan is in a prominent position.

Thirty years after winning the national first prize, Nguyen Thi Xuan Nhan, now Vice Principal of Quang Tri Medical College, still has the same feeling when recalling the glorious moments of her student years. She said that during those days, she was staying in the dormitory of a specialized school, studying and reviewing for the upcoming graduation and university entrance exams.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuan Nhan is currently Vice Principal of Quang Tri Medical College.

Suddenly, teacher Nguyen Tu, a Biology specialist from the Quang Tri Department of Education and Training, came to announce: "I just received information from the Ministry of Education and Training that Xuan Nhan won first prize in Biology at the national competition for excellent students." The whole group of friends hugged each other to congratulate each other, and the school dormitory that day was happier and more bustling than usual.

“When I heard the good news from my teacher, I was very happy but also a bit surprised. Because, at the national exam that year, after two rounds of taking the test with 8 difficult questions, I checked my results and the teachers and staff on the team all predicted that I would get a high score, but I didn’t dare think of it as the first prize. I felt proud to have won the national first prize in the first school year (1994-1995) of the newly established Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted and became the first student in Quang Tri province to have this honor,” Ms. Xuan Nhan shared.

Ms. Xuan Nhan was a student majoring in Mathematics since childhood, participating in many Math competitions for excellent students, and achieving many high prizes. From primary school, she studied Mathematics at Trieu Hai District Specialized School. In secondary school, she studied Mathematics at Quang Tri Province Primary and Secondary Specialized School. In grade 9, she achieved high prizes in the provincial Math competition for excellent students, so she was transferred directly to grade 10 of the Math specialized school.

Ms. Xuan Nhan is good at all subjects. Besides Math, there are two other subjects that she really likes and is passionate about: Biology and Chemistry. In grade 12, in the provincial exam for excellent students, she took both Math and Biology, and then became the top student in Biology, so she was "forced" to join the Biology team.

That year was the first time the Quang Tri Province Biology Team was established to participate in the national competition for excellent students. The team's students mainly studied other specialized subjects and were students from high schools in the province who had won high prizes in the previous provincial competition for excellent students.

The teachers also taught the national team in Biology for the first time, but they were very dedicated and experienced because they were teaching at many high-quality schools in the province. The teachers helped her and her teammates access, study, and read many valuable books and documents. Thanks to that, she achieved high results in the national excellent student selection exam and achieved her wish to pass the entrance exam to Hue University of Medicine as her initial wish to become a doctor and contribute a small part to protecting the health of the community.

Nearly thirty years later, the interesting story of a student majoring in Mathematics winning a prize in the national Biology competition coincidentally repeated itself with Ms. Xuan Nhan's daughter. Student Tran Ngoc Tam Phuc, born in 2005, studying in the Mathematics class of 2020-2023 at Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted, won 3 national prizes in 3 years of study; in the 2022-2023 school year, Tam Phuc won the second prize in Biology, and is currently studying at Hanoi Medical University.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuan Nhan (2nd from right) returned to show gratitude to her high school.

Ms. Xuan Nhan shared that she was quite surprised by the coincidence in many points between mother and daughter. Her parents are former students of specialized schools, they understand quite well the honor as well as the pressure of specialized students, so they oriented their daughter to choose a specialized subject that suits her abilities, strengths, and interests. Therefore, her daughter chose to study specialized Mathematics. On the first day of school in grade 10, someone even teased that this specialized Mathematics student would win a national Biology prize, but unexpectedly, the joke became true.

Studying this subject and taking the exam for excellent students in another subject is not simple because it requires students to have a long review process and have deep and wide knowledge of the subjects. Perhaps in addition to his own determination, the support and guidance of his teachers, the inspiration from his mother has urged Tam Phuc to contribute to telling the story of a former student of Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted more meaningfully.

Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted.

Ms. Xuan Nhan modestly said that as a former student of Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted, everyone must be proud because the school has had thousands of excellent, talented, successful students in many fields, industries, and professions...

Among the students who won prizes in national competitions for excellent students, she and her mother were honored to contribute to the overall achievements of the school and Quang Tri province. The mother and her daughter had many coincidences, so they were quite special compared to other cases. Many teachers, generations of students always mentioned and knew this story, which touched and cherished her.

Since graduating from the Faculty of Medicine at Hue University of Medicine, she has worked at Quang Tri Medical College, now holding the position of Vice Principal. Over the past twenty years, she has contributed to the school training thousands of students, who have graduated and worked in most medical facilities at all levels. Not to mention, she has also contributed to training more than 300 medical students for Laos. These students have returned to their home country and become key cadres in the medical sector in Laos.

In each lesson, each inspirational story for students, she often mentions two important factors of each person, which are knowledge and compassion to contribute to the development of society more meaningfully. She always focuses on and cultivates compassion for each student, hoping that her student generations will bring that culture and knowledge back to help life.

Lao students are welcomed at Quang Tri Medical College, where Ms. Xuan Nhan works.

Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Tri province Hoang Nam assessed that after 30 years of construction and development, Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted deserves to be a place to contribute to training high-quality human resources for the homeland and the country.

The school's outstanding achievements include 554 awards in national cultural competitions for excellent students, many of which are high. Many students have reached out to the regional and international intellectual arena with proud achievements such as: Silver Medal in Asia-Pacific Informatics by Thai Xuan Dang (IT major, 2018-2021), Silver Medal at the Singapore and Asian Mathematics Olympiad - SASMO 2017 by Vo Thuc Khanh Huyen (Math major, 2017-2020).
