These days, the house of Trieu Thi Phuong Thuy, who just won the gold medal in Kun Khmer at the 32nd SEA Games, is always full of people. People come to congratulate, share the joy as well as to meet the "golden girl" of Kun Khmer in person.
Phuong Thuy shows off her "treasure trove of achievements" both domestically and internationally.
On May 14, upon learning that Trieu Thi Phuong Thuy had returned home after winning the gold medal in Khmer Kun at the 32nd SEA Games, reporters from Dai Doan Ket Newspaper traveled hundreds of kilometers to the mountainous commune of Thuong Long, Yen Lap District (Phu Tho). In front of us was a small house, filled with the sound of laughter. Inside, we saw everyone looking at the petite girl wearing a sports shirt with a yellow star, with all their admiration and pride.
Seeing the guest, Phuong Thuy quickly stood up, smiled, warmly shook hands, and invited him in for a drink. The already small house became even more cramped as the walls were filled with trophies, medals, and certificates of merit from both inside and outside the country.
“I have loved martial arts since I was a child, first Vovinam, then Kick Boxing, Muay Thai and recently Kun Khmer. I have won awards in every sport, including an Asian silver medal, a world bronze medal, 5 times national champion in Muay Thai, 4 times national champion in Kick Boxing and 2 times medalist at the SEA Games…”, Phuong Thuy proudly shared.

To achieve high achievements and bring glory to the Fatherland, it is impossible not to mention the difficult days, even at times this girl born in 2000 of the Dao ethnic group wanted to give up. According to Phuong Thuy, during the training process, she was injured many times, very painful, but thinking of "the colors of the flag", she had more motivation to overcome.
“The 32nd SEA Games was held in Cambodia, Muay Thai was not on the competition list so I was selected for the Kun Khmer team. In a very short time, I had to lose 5 kg to compete in the 51 kg weight class. Another difficulty was that the competition rules of the two sports were different so I had to practice at a high intensity to get used to it. Especially in the final match, a lot of spectators came to cheer for the home team, but instead of feeling pressured, I considered it as cheering for myself so I could confidently compete…”, Phuong Thuy told PV Dai Doan Ket.
Sitting in a corner, Mrs. Trieu Thi Thin (mother of Trieu Thi Phuong Thuy) seemed quiet but her eyes were filled with pride and happiness. When asked, Mrs. Thin said that her family was a farmer and very busy. When they heard that their daughter was competing in the final match on the evening of May 11, the whole family put everything aside to cheer for her.
“While watching, my family and I were very nervous, no one said a word to each other but just stared at the screen. Only when the referee announced the result did the whole family burst into happiness,” Ms. Thin recalled.

Looking up at the “golden girl” with affection, Mrs. Thin shared that when Thuy was in 7th grade, she was selected to be on the team to compete in the Phu Dong Sports Festival of Phu Tho province. However, that year, Vovinam was not on the list, but because the coach recognized her talent for Kick Boxing, he chose Thuy and brought her to Hanoi for training.
“When Thuy first came to Hanoi to train, her family was quite worried because she was still young and had never been away from her parents before, so they didn’t know if she could continue her career. Especially when she called home to say that training was hard, she got injured and missed home and wanted to quit school, the family could only encourage her to try harder. After a while, when she got used to the new environment, Thuy clearly showed that she had a lot of desire and determination, so the family was reassured,” Ms. Thin shared.
According to Ms. Thin, because her family is very busy with farming, after each training session, training or competition, Thuy always comes home to visit her family and help with everything.
“Many people think that having a daughter who has won many high prizes both domestically and internationally and sends money back home will make her very rich, but in reality, that is not the case. The family is still very poor. This time, my daughter has a week off, which is right at the time of the cinnamon harvest. Thuy will rest for a few days and then go back to the hills to help her family,” Ms. Thin added.
Local authorities and people came to meet and congratulate the "golden girl" Kun Khmer.
According to Mr. Dinh Hai Nam, Vice Chairman of Yen Lap District People's Committee, immediately after hearing the news that Trieu Thi Phuong Thuy won the 32nd SEA Games gold medal and returned to visit her family, on the afternoon of May 14, the District People's Committee visited her family and rewarded her with 5 million VND.
“The gold medal that Phuong Thuy won is not only a personal honor, but also a joy and pride for Vietnam in general and for the local Party Committee and government in particular. She is a typical example, creating motivation and spreading confidence and aspiration to rise up for athletes and coaches in Phu Tho province," Mr. Dinh Hai Nam added./.
