D EASY TO REMEMBER BY INTERESTING WAY OF COMMUNICATION
English teaching videos on TikTok in particular and social networks in general often provide useful knowledge, moderate difficulty through "trendy" and humorous expressions. Therefore, the online platform has become a new learning tool for many 12th grade students.
Often watching English teaching videos on TikTok, Phan Thi My Nuong (Mac Dinh Chi High School, District 6, Ho Chi Minh City), shared: "With short videos, the amount of knowledge is certainly not as much as what is provided in school. However, it stays in the mind longer, because the knowledge is divided into small parts, helping the brain absorb it faster and easier. Each video has a different way of conveying but is close, humorous, not dry; the theory is expressed through vivid images and sounds accompanied by memorable situations".
Thanks to that, Nuong herself has applied quite a bit of knowledge from the videos. The proof is that some knowledge that Nuong just watched immediately appeared in exam questions or daily communication situations.
Similarly, Nguyen Thi Ngoc Truc (Kien Luong High School, Kien Giang Province) also found that online English teaching videos are easy to remember because of the interesting, non-mechanical way of teaching and concise knowledge. However, for Ngoc Truc, the brevity sometimes leads to limitations in the amount of knowledge, which cannot be compared to the full content in books.
Currently, Truc combines studying at school and studying through online platforms like TikTok, but she still prioritizes studying at school because of its authenticity, ensuring both quality and quantity.

WHAT DO CONTENT CREATORS SAY?
Reality proves that TikTok can bring learning value to users if exploited and used properly. Therefore, some content creators have focused on theeducation field, specifically conveying English knowledge in an easy-to-understand and vivid way.
Nearly 2 years ago, when more and more young people were using TikTok, Mr. Tran Duc Hoang (an English teacher at NQH Education System, Ho Chi Minh City) thought of taking advantage of this social network to share knowledge about IELTS, TOEIC and English in general. Gradually, he realized that learning English through short videos online has changed a lot of the way he approaches foreign languages.
"Sometimes, a short video like this can solve a big problem for students in learning English," said Mr. Hoang.
Mr. Phan Phuc Thien Phuoc (TV MC, content creator in Ho Chi Minh City) also sees the positive side of the online learning method as students have more access to listening and speaking English, and can verify knowledge learned at school by seeing how it is applied in daily life.
With the recent series "English without formulas" to "change the wind" of learning English, Mr. Phuoc shared: "Formulas are often applied to exercises or exams, but they unintentionally destroy the thinking that forms spoken language - the most important skill when learning a language". Therefore, he hopes that his videos can improve learners' speaking skills in addition to practicing skills for exams.
STUDENTS NEED TO KNOW HOW TO CHOOSE REPUTABLE CHANNEL
Knowing about videos providing English knowledge on TikTok, Facebook..., Ms. Tran Huong Giang (English teacher, Ngo Quyen High School, Bien Hoa City, Dong Nai Province) assessed that the amount of knowledge is guaranteed to be accurate if students know how to choose reputable channels. Moreover, most of the teachers have certain experience and expertise in English, so the teaching quality is almost the same as that of teachers in high schools.
"However, the difference is in the method. In class, teachers teach a complete lesson on a certain area of knowledge, while these channels often summarize knowledge to condense it within the allowed length of a video," said Ms. Giang.
The "playing while learning" method through online platforms brings undeniable benefits such as cost savings, flexible learning time, rich content, high interactivity...
NEED TO COMBINE TWO METHODS
Studying directly at school provides a comprehensive curriculum as well as ensuring teaching quality, but is often dry and difficult to remember when the amount of knowledge is relatively large. Meanwhile, the "learning while playing" method on social networks inspires learning, but it is difficult to verify the quality of knowledge because anyone can share it; short videos with random content also make it difficult for learners to follow the learning process.
From here, the question is how to flexibly combine and take advantage of the advantages of both methods?
According to teachers, for online learning, students can refer to the following notes: Establish certain criteria in choosing channels: information about the teacher, quality of content, communication style, reviews from other viewers...
Students should combine both in-school and online learning methods to achieve high efficiency.
Focus on quality by only following a few trustworthy teachers; don't spend time watching too many videos, but focus on watching carefully to ensure knowledge is deeply remembered.
Save videos, screenshots or take notes to review regularly and apply in practice. Filter and verify information through many different sources. Review the channels you follow to avoid getting lost in other entertainment content and forgetting the purpose of learning.
"However, the nature of TikTok or other social networks is still just an entertainment platform. So in order to not receive superficial knowledge, students need to combine both methods, but still learn mainly through books, and online channels are just supporting tools," Ms. Giang concluded.
Overall, TikTok is ultimately no substitute for long, in-depth lectures at school.
"Only teachers in the classroom can clearly understand the strengths and weaknesses of students. Social networks should only be seen as a place to update some interesting and new knowledge, avoid abuse," added teacher Tran Duc Hoang.
From here, we can see that the role of teachers at school is extremely important to improve the quality of students' learning, helping them to arouse their love and inspiration for English.
To make the classroom lessons effective, Ms. Tran Huong Giang suggested that teachers should strive to find new and lively teaching methods, such as inserting videos and images next to the theory to increase the visuality; designing games; creating conditions for presentations and group discussions. In addition, lectures should include a lot of knowledge and skills for students to form critical thinking.
Finally, no matter what learning method is used, it is essential that students have a solid grasp of the knowledge and understand their current level, because teachers and online channels only provide additional support for students during the exam preparation process.
Be careful to avoid unpredictable consequences
Although it brings many benefits, according to Ms. Tran Huong Giang, the fact that some students only like to watch quick videos and forget about knowledge from books and school causes many unpredictable consequences:
- Students do not have a solid grasp of basic knowledge so they cannot apply it to exercises.
- Most channels guide the fastest way to learn or give tips so students do not understand the nature of the problem.
- The attraction of the channel easily makes students follow the trend without clearly understanding their own foreign language ability.
- Some channels have not been censored for content and therefore convey incorrect knowledge.
- Focusing too much on short videos on online platforms will make students neglect their studies at school.
