On May 4, Quang Ninh Provincial Police said that drowning is one of the leading causes of death in children. According to statistics from the Ministry of Health , each year about 6,000 children die from drowning, accounting for 48% of the total number of children who die from accidents. Drowning can happen anywhere there is water, from rivers, lakes, seas to swimming pools, aquariums or even bathtubs.
According to the police, one of the causes of drowning in children is the lack of supervision and protection by adults. Many cases of children playing too excitedly or curiously, without the attention and timely intervention of adults, lead to unfortunate accidents.

Quang Ninh Provincial Police gave an example of the case of two 4-year-old children in Quang Ninh who tragically drowned at a Koi fish pond on the afternoon of February 8, 2023.
At that time, the two children, LKN and D.AK (born in 2019, in Cao Xanh ward, Ha Long city) left home to play. At around 6:10 p.m. the same day, the two families did not see the children so they went to look for them.
At 7pm, Mr. CVL (born in 1994, living in Cao Xanh ward) discovered two children floating on the water in his Koi pond. Although they were quickly taken to the emergency room, they died due to drowning for a long time.
Previously, in Nghe An, there was also an incident where a 2-year-old child died after falling into his family's fish tank.
Quang Ninh Provincial Police said that although the water in these fish tanks is not too deep for young children, if they accidentally fall into the tanks, it can cause them to panic and lead to drowning.
To prevent and reduce the risk of drowning in children, Quang Ninh Provincial Police recommend that parents always supervise and watch their children when they are near water sources, even if they know how to swim.
In addition, parents should also install fences around fish tanks, swimming pools or other water sources in the house and yard. Teach children swimming skills early.
The police also requested parents to equip their children with protective gear such as life jackets and helmets when they participate in water activities. Raise awareness and knowledge of how to handle drowning accidents for both adults and children.
