Geographical indication “Ca Mau” announced for blood cockle product

On the afternoon of May 26th, the Department of Science and Technology of Ca Mau province, in coordination with the Intellectual Property Office and the Southern Center for Soil, Fertilizer and Environment Research, held a ceremony to announce the Decision and award the geographical indication certificate "Ca Mau" for Ca Mau province's blood cockle product, and simultaneously signed a cooperation plan to strengthen the enforcement of intellectual property rights.

The geographical indication " Ca Mau " for blood cockles is protected by the Intellectual Property Office when it meets four conditions: The blood cockle product bearing the geographical indication "Ca Mau" must be farmed within the geographical area and meet quality standards – meaning the blood cockle product meets the specific quality criteria protected by the Ca Mau geographical indication; the product must be produced by organizations or individuals granted a Certificate of Right to Use the Geographical Indication by the state agency managing geographical indications; the product must be controlled according to regulations during production and have traceability; and the product must be affixed with a geographical indication label that meets the product's traceability requirements.

Mr. Luu Hoang Long, Director of the Intellectual Property Office, delivered a speech at the ceremony.

The granting of a geographical indication certificate for Ca Mau province's blood cockle product is a significant milestone. This is not only a source of joy for the people in the blood cockle farming region, but also a shared pride for Ca Mau province in its journey to build and affirm its local brand in the domestic and international markets.

At the ceremony, the Department of Science and Technology of Ca Mau province and the Intellectual Property Office signed a cooperation program for the period 2026-2030. Through this program, the two units will coordinate in state management, demonstrating their shared determination to build a transparent and effective intellectual property environment; promote innovation; support businesses and individuals in developing brands; and improve the effectiveness of enforcing and protecting intellectual property rights in the province.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Luu Hoang Long, Director of the Intellectual Property Office, highly appreciated Ca Mau province's determination in building a comprehensive intellectual property development model, from establishing rights, governance, commercial exploitation to strengthening enforcement. Looking ahead, Mr. Luu Hoang Long suggested that all parties continue to strengthen coordination to improve the capacity for enforcing intellectual property rights; promote the application of digital technology in detecting, warning, and handling infringements; enhance monitoring and evaluation of enforcement effectiveness; and raise community awareness about respecting and protecting intellectual property rights.

The geographical indication "Ca Mau" for blood cockle products is protected by the Intellectual Property Office when all four conditions are met.

"Regarding the geographical indication 'Ca Mau' for blood cockles, as well as other renowned products protected by intellectual property rights, special attention should be paid to managing their use, controlling quality, tracing their origin, maintaining the unique characteristics of the products, and proactively protecting rights in both domestic and international markets," Mr. Luu Hoang Long emphasized.
