In its statement, TDK said it has developed a ceramic material with an energy density 100 times greater than conventional solid-state batteries. The new ceramic battery technology is aimed at wearable devices such as smartwatches, hearing aids or wireless headphones.
This could be great news for the future Apple Watch and AirPods, especially considering European regulations regarding mobile device batteries, which require that mobile devices run on batteries that can be easily replaced during repairs.
It's still unclear whether TDK's new battery technology will come to the Apple Watch.
TDK did not name the products that could use the new ceramic solid-state battery, but the company said the new CeraCharge battery could replace the current coin-cell battery and comply with European Union (EU) battery regulations. It is still too early to say whether the new battery technology will be used in the upcoming Apple Watch or AirPods models, but it is entirely possible since TDK is an Apple supplier.
Talking about the new generation of solid-state battery technology, TDK said that they have an energy density of 1,000 Wh/L, 100 times greater than the density of current solid-state batteries. The new batteries use oxide-based electrolytes and lithium alloy anodes, making them "extremely safe".
TDK also notes that the new ceramic batteries are designed for use in devices that come into direct contact with human skin. It’s unclear at this point which new devices will get the new solid-state batteries, or whether Apple will opt for them anytime soon.
