(Quang Ngai Newspaper) - In the context of many fluctuations in world oil prices, Dung Quat Oil Refinery (NMLD), managed and operated by Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical Joint Stock Company ( BSR ), has also suffered many impacts. However, overcoming difficulties and challenges, in the first 9 months of 2024, BSR produced nearly 4.8 million tons of products, achieving revenue of more than 87 trillion VND.
BSR representative said that by producing nearly 4.8 million tons of products in the first 9 months of 2024, Dung Quat Refinery has made an important contribution to ensuring national energy security. In particular, the company has promoted the application of cost-saving solutions in production operations and energy saving to overcome the challenge of falling oil prices. The company's revenue in the third quarter of 2024 reached nearly 32 trillion VND, and the accumulated revenue in the first 9 months of 2024 reached more than 87 trillion VND.

Recently, world oil prices have fluctuated strongly, with crude oil prices (Dated Brent) falling from an average of 85.31 USD/barrel in July 2024 to 74.33 USD/barrel in September 2024, and the gap between crude oil prices and product prices (crack spread) has also narrowed, leading to a sharp decrease in the company's profits. Despite many difficulties, BSR's total assets increased by more than 2.5 trillion VND (from 86.5 trillion VND to 89.1 trillion VND). Currently, Dung Quat Oil Refinery must maintain stable production to ensure supply to the market, ensure national energy security, and seek solutions to overcome difficulties and challenges in the current market period.
Facing difficulties due to the sharp drop in oil prices, BSR has focused on operating Dung Quat Refinery at optimal capacity, while applying comprehensive solutions to save costs, optimize energy, initiatives, technical improvements, and solutions on management, production and business to cope with objective disadvantages from the international petroleum market.
According to BSR leaders, not only when the market is facing difficulties like now, but also at favorable times, BSR always focuses on promoting energy saving. More than 70 technical innovation solutions have been applied in practice to significantly improve energy efficiency in the entire Dung Quat Refinery. Typically, BSR put the frequency converter system for the PM-5207A engine into operation, saving more than half a million kWh. Another solution is "Optimizing operations by optimizing loads receiving power from the pump system, compressors working in parallel while still ensuring stability and reliability for the load systems". With this solution, the amount of energy saved/year is more than 26 million kWh of electricity. Or the solution "Optimizing the operating mode for the seawater cooling system" helps increase the working efficiency of the equipment, while saving energy for the entire factory. The solution was applied from January 12, 2021, the total application time for 2021 is 309 days, saving about 1.9 million USD/year, the total electricity saved is 12.34 million kWh/year...
The above solutions have helped the Energy Intensive Index (EII), which characterizes the plant's energy efficiency, to decrease significantly, from 118% before 2015 to 104 - 106% in 2020 - 2023 and to decrease to about 100% after the Dung Quat NMLD general maintenance (March, April 2024). Internal energy consumption has correspondingly decreased from over 7.4% to 6.8%. According to the assessment report of the Solomon Organization, reducing the EII index by 1% is equivalent to saving about 2.6 million USD/year.
