(TN&MT) - The "presence" of Lien Chieu seaport will contribute to increasing the position of Da Nang Bay on the map of bays in Vietnam. From here, Da Nang has the opportunity to break through to develop a strong and sustainable marine economy associated with protecting security and sovereignty of the sea and islands...

Welcoming the potential for breakthrough

Da Nang City is endowed by nature with many great advantages and is a locality with great potential for strong development of the sea and marine economy . Da Nang has taken advantage of its potential and advantages of a coastline of more than 90km with many fine white sand beaches and gentle waves, of which My Khe beach was once voted by Forbes Magazine as one of the 6 most attractive beaches on the planet to develop highly specific sea tourism and build the Da Nang tourism brand.

The appearance of Lien Chieu port will turn Da Nang into one of the multi-industry economic development centers of the Central Strait.

Seafood exploitation and processing continue to be one of the city's main export items. In addition, Da Nang has the potential to develop renewable and clean energy sources. The city has also issued policies to encourage the development of renewable and new energy sources, including solar energy, wind energy, and wave energy.

Focusing on seaport exploitation services, on December 14, 2022, Da Nang started construction of Lien Chieu Port - a key deep-water port in the Central region to promptly meet the growing demand for goods through Da Nang seaport in the coming years. This is good news for Da Nang people, because from here, a series of plans on infrastructure and tourism, logistics, and industrial development will be implemented, ready to "breakthrough", contributing to the development of the "coastal city" of Da Nang and the region.

With the growth rate, the volume of goods passing through Da Nang seaport in recent years has reached an average of 10%/year, in 2020, the volume of goods passing through Da Nang port reached 11.4 million tons. The forecasted volume of goods is 50 million tons by 2050.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, President Nguyen Xuan Phuc said that Da Nang port had a glorious past on the international maritime trade route as recorded in the book Dai Nam Nhat Thong Chi of the Nguyen Dynasty: "The water is deep and wide, with mountains blocking the way, passing boats and ships encountering strong winds often stop here". Thus, Da Nang port not only has potential for international economic, trade and investment exchanges but is also a "throat" position for national defense and security of the country...

The groundbreaking of the Lien Chieu Port Construction Investment Project - Shared Infrastructure is a very practical and concrete step, gradually realizing the strategic goal in Resolution 43 of the Politburo on building and developing Da Nang city by 2030, with a vision to 2045, which is: to become one of the major socio-economic centers of the country and Southeast Asia; by 2045, "Da Nang city becomes a large, ecological and smart urban area, a center for startups, innovation and a livable coastal city reaching the level of the Asian region".

Green growth platform

Sustainable development of the marine economy plays a key role for the city. However, Da Nang is facing many problems and challenges, which if not overcome will affect efficiency and sustainability. These include the depletion of coastal aquatic resources; weak and outdated infrastructure in coastal and marine areas; pollution in the bay and outlet areas from the consequences of "hot" tourism exploitation.

Da Nang has great potential to develop marine economy.

According to the Master Plan for the development of Vietnam's seaport system for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050, approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 1579/QD-TTg dated September 22, 2021, Da Nang seaport is the largest seaport in the Central region and one of the three largest and key seaports in Vietnam.

Therefore, the "key" to sustainable development of the marine economy in Da Nang City is green growth, linking economic development with environmental protection. Specifically, development on the basis of green growth, effective and sustainable exploitation of marine resources, conservation of biodiversity and marine ecosystems. According to Mr. Ho Ky Minh - Permanent Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Da Nang City, the city has integrated the contents of sustainable development of the marine economy into the plan to implement Resolution 43 of the Politburo on building and developing Da Nang City to 2030, with a vision to 2045. The People's Committee of the city has issued Decision No. 688/QD-UBND promulgating the plan to implement Action Program No. 28-CTr/TU on sustainable development of the city's marine economy to 2030, with a vision to 2045.

Accordingly, the city focuses on investing in tourism infrastructure, prioritizing investment in high-quality resorts; converting Tien Sa port into a tourist port; building and developing an international-class sea tourism brand... Along with that, the City People's Committee assigned the Department of Tourism to continue implementing the project to manage and exploit tourism at the beaches along Nguyen Tat Thanh Street.

Also in the above plan, the City People's Committee sets out the task of developing the maritime economy. Accordingly, building the Da Nang port cluster into a large, modern port cluster, a port center of the Central region, reaching the level of the Southeast Asian region; improving the capacity and output of the ports, ensuring the handling of 100% of the volume of incoming and outgoing goods; gradually developing maritime transport services, maritime services to become a strength, a breakthrough in the development of other economic sectors.

At the same time, complete logistics infrastructure and traffic routes connecting seaports with industrial parks of the city and with domestic and international regions and localities; develop maritime transport fleet, improve service quality, participate deeply in transport supply chains...

Regarding seafood exploitation, one of the city's strengths, the City People's Committee has set out the task of shifting from traditional seafood exploitation to modern, advanced methods, applying high technology; adjusting the structure of vessels towards promoting offshore exploitation; promoting production linkages in the form of cooperatives and cooperative unions. At the same time, investing in building a number of economic sectors based on exploiting marine biodiversity resources such as: marine medicinal herbs; cultivating and processing seaweed, algae, seagrass, etc.

The city also promotes investment in construction, exploitation of wind power, solar power and other forms of renewable energy to serve the sustainable development of the marine economy. Development of coastal industry and exploitation of marine minerals...

The above solutions and tasks aim to build Da Nang into a major marine economic center of the country, an international marine urban area by 2030 and a city with sustainable, prosperous, secure and safe marine economic development by 2045.
