(TN&MT) - The presence of Lien Chieu seaport will contribute to enhancing the position of Da Nang Bay on the map of Vietnam's bays. From here, Da Nang has the opportunity to make a breakthrough in developing its marine economy sustainably, while protecting maritime security and sovereignty ...
Embrace the potential for breakthroughs.
Da Nang City is blessed with many great natural advantages and has great potential for strong development in the marine and maritime economy . Da Nang has leveraged its potential and advantages of a coastline over 90km long with many fine white sand beaches and gentle waves, including My Khe Beach, which was once voted by Forbes magazine as one of the six most attractive beaches on the planet, to develop highly distinctive beach tourism and build the Da Nang tourism brand.

The emergence of Lien Chieu Port will transform Da Nang into one of the leading multi-sector economic centers in the central coastal region.
The seafood harvesting and processing industry continues to be one of the city's main export items. In addition, Da Nang has the potential to develop renewable and clean energy sources. The city has also enacted policies to encourage the development of renewable and new energy sources, including solar energy, wind energy, and wave energy.
With port services as its main focus, on December 14, 2022, Da Nang commenced construction of Lien Chieu Port – a key deep-water port in the Central region – to promptly meet the growing demand for cargo throughput in Da Nang in the coming years. This is good news for the people of Da Nang, as it will pave the way for the implementation of a series of infrastructure and tourism, logistics, and industrial development plans, ready to "break through" and contribute to the development of Da Nang as a "coastal city" and the surrounding region.
With a growth rate of 10% per year, the volume of goods passing through Da Nang seaport has averaged 10% in recent years. In 2020, the volume of goods handled by Da Nang port reached 11.4 million tons. The projected volume of goods will reach 50 million tons by 2050.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, President Nguyen Xuan Phuc stated that Da Nang port once had a glorious past on the international maritime trade route, as recorded in the Dai Nam Nhat Thong Chi of the Nguyen Dynasty: "The waters are deep and wide, with mountains providing shelter; ships passing through often anchor here during strong winds." Thus, Da Nang port not only has potential for international economic, trade, and investment exchanges but also serves as a crucial strategic location for national defense and security…
The commencement of the Lien Chieu Port construction project - the shared infrastructure component - is a concrete and practical step towards realizing the strategic goals outlined in Resolution 43 of the Politburo on the construction and development of Da Nang City until 2030, with a vision to 2045, which are: to become one of the major socio-economic centers of the country and Southeast Asia; and by 2045, "Da Nang City will become a large, ecological, and smart city, a center for entrepreneurship, innovation, and a livable coastal city of regional Asian standards."
Green growth platform
Sustainable development of the marine economy plays a crucial role for the city. However, Da Nang is facing many shortcomings and challenges that, if not addressed, will affect its effectiveness and sustainability. These include the depletion of coastal fisheries resources; weak and outdated infrastructure in coastal areas; and pollution in the bay and drainage outlets resulting from the rapid development of tourism.

Da Nang has great potential for developing its marine economy.
According to the Master Plan for the Development of Vietnam's Seaport System for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 1579/QD-TTg dated September 22, 2021, Da Nang seaport is the largest seaport in the Central region and one of the three largest and key seaports in Vietnam.
Therefore, the "key" to sustainable marine economic development in Da Nang City is green growth, linking economic development with environmental protection. Specifically, development should be based on green growth, efficient and sustainable exploitation of marine resources, and conservation of biodiversity and marine ecosystems. According to Mr. Ho Ky Minh, Permanent Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Da Nang City, the city has integrated the contents of sustainable marine economic development into the plan to implement Resolution 43 of the Politburo on building and developing Da Nang City until 2030, with a vision to 2045. The People's Committee of Da Nang City has issued Decision No. 688/QD-UBND promulgating the plan to implement Action Program No. 28-CTr/TU on sustainable marine economic development of the city until 2030, with a vision to 2045.
Accordingly, the city focuses on investing in tourism infrastructure, prioritizing investment in high-quality resort areas; transforming Tien Sa Port into a tourist port; building and developing an internationally-class beach tourism brand... In addition, the City People's Committee has assigned the Department of Tourism to continue implementing the project for managing and exploiting tourism at the beaches along Nguyen Tat Thanh Street.
Also in the aforementioned plan, the People's Committee of Da Nang City set out the task of developing the maritime economy. Accordingly, the plan aims to build the Da Nang port cluster into a large, modern port cluster, the port center of Central Vietnam, reaching the level of the Southeast Asian region; to improve the capacity and efficiency of the ports, ensuring 100% handling of incoming and outgoing cargo; and to gradually develop maritime transport and maritime services into a strength and breakthrough in the development of other economic sectors.
At the same time, improve logistics infrastructure and transportation routes connecting seaports with industrial zones in the city and with regions and localities domestically and internationally; develop the maritime transport fleet, improve service quality, and participate deeply in transportation supply chains…
Regarding seafood exploitation, one of the city's strengths, the City People's Committee has set the task of shifting from traditional to modern, advanced methods of seafood exploitation, applying high technology; adjusting the structure of fishing vessels to promote offshore fishing; and promoting production linkages through cooperative groups and cooperative unions. At the same time, it aims to invest in the development of several economic sectors based on the exploitation of marine biodiversity resources such as: marine medicinal plants; cultivation and processing of seaweed, algae, and seagrass…
The city also promotes investment in the construction and exploitation of wind power, solar power, and other forms of renewable energy to serve the sustainable development of the marine economy. This includes developing coastal industries and exploiting marine mineral resources…
The aforementioned solutions and tasks aim to build Da Nang into a major maritime economic center of the country and an international coastal city by 2030, and into a city with sustainable, prosperous, secure, and safe maritime economic development by 2045.
